The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission announced on 19 August 2026 that former Alameda Research chief executive Caroline Ellison faced a five-year trading ban and a ten-year registration ban. The restrictions followed the fraud involving Alameda and FTX customer funds.

Ellison left federal custody in January 2026. In September, nonprofit Manifund confirmed that she had joined the organisation. Her prison release, employment and regulatory restrictions are different developments and must not be conflated.

Where is Caroline Ellison working in 2026?

Manifund co-founder Austin Chen said on 11 September that Ellison began a trial on 13 July and joined full-time on 10 August 2026. She worked on technology and research for the philanthropic funding platform, using the name “Carol” in some of her early public interactions.

Chen acknowledged her criminal history and explained his decision to hire her. His statement is evidence of a new role, not evidence that Ellison has resumed cryptocurrency trading or management of Alameda.

What does the CFTC trading ban mean?

The CFTC's August 2026 release describes five-year trading and ten-year CFTC registration bans. Both run from the original consent order dated 23 December 2022, not from the announcement in August 2026.

Consequently, the five-year period points toward December 2027 and the ten-year period toward December 2032, subject to the precise court orders. Describing the bans as newly starting in 2026 would misstate their duration.

The regulator said it was not seeking a civil monetary penalty, disgorgement or restitution from Ellison in that proceeding at the time, citing her cooperation. It also cited a criminal $11.020 billion forfeiture order involving multiple defendants. That figure is not proof Ellison personally repaid that sum to FTX customers.

SEC restrictions are separate from the CFTC order

The Securities and Exchange Commission described its final-judgment proceedings in December 2025. The federal court's 23 December judgment prohibits Ellison from serving as an officer or director of certain publicly reporting companies for ten years. It also restricts involvement in securities transactions for five years, with an exception for her own personal account.

Those securities restrictions do not mean she is barred from every kind of employment. Nor should the SEC and CFTC orders be described as a single comprehensive trading prohibition.

Ellison's role in Alameda Research and the FTX collapse

Ellison led Alameda, the trading firm founded by Sam Bankman-Fried. Federal prosecutors described an arrangement in which Alameda could access FTX customer funds, which were then used for trading, investments and other spending without customers' permission.

The SEC alleged in December 2022 that Ellison bought FTX's FTT token, at Bankman-Fried's direction, to support its price. Such activity had implications for Alameda's apparent financial health and what exchange investors understood about the relationship between the two businesses.

When FTX halted withdrawals and entered bankruptcy in November 2022, customers entered a separate insolvency process. Finlazo's FTX collapse and customer repayments report follows that process; Ellison does not administer it.

Why was Caroline Ellison sentenced to only two years?

Ellison pleaded guilty in December 2022 to criminal fraud and conspiracy-related counts. At sentencing in September 2024, the federal judge recognised extensive cooperation, including testimony during Bankman-Fried's 2023 trial, but still imposed two years in prison, according to contemporaneous courtroom reporting.

Bankman-Fried, who was convicted at trial, was sentenced to 25 years in March 2024. His appellate case is covered in Finlazo's Supreme Court petition analysis. Ellison's cooperation does not automatically affect his conviction.

What can crypto customers learn from the case?

FTX exposed the risk of undisclosed transfers between an exchange entrusted with customer assets and a related trading business. Customers should distinguish an exchange's marketing claims from its custody, asset segregation and withdrawal arrangements.

Finlazo's directory of closed cryptocurrency exchanges records very different shutdowns and insolvencies. The Mt. Gox creditor process, Cryptopia liquidation and Bittrex US bankruptcy each involved different facts and legal outcomes.

Does her release change FTX customer repayments?

No. Ellison's employment and legal restrictions do not determine the amount or timing of bankruptcy distributions. The FTX customer claims process has separate administrators, deadlines and eligibility checks.

Anyone contacted about a supposed expedited payment should verify the notice through official claims channels rather than an unsolicited link. Finlazo's Bitcoin fraud guide explains common impersonation risks.

As of 24 October 2026, the documented position is that Ellison has left federal custody, works for Manifund and remains subject to court-ordered restrictions. Those facts do not constitute a pardon or an announcement that former FTX customers have been fully repaid.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Federal-custody records reported in January 2026 indicated her release, and Manifund later announced that she had started employment.
