Why Did Mt. Gox Close? Bitcoin Losses and Creditor Repayments
Mt. Gox closed in 2014. Its creditor repayments through Japanese civil rehabilitation continued, with a trustee deadline extended to October 2026.

Mt. Gox's rehabilitation trustee extended the deadline for certain creditor repayments to October 31, 2026, Japan Standard Time. The former Tokyo-based Bitcoin exchange ceased operations in 2014. Its legal proceedings have continued for more than a decade.
By March 27, 2025, the trustee had made Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash repayments to more than 19,500 rehabilitation creditors. Other creditors were still waiting.
The 2026 date is a deadline for covered repayments by the trustee. It is not a new deadline for former customers to register claims.
Why did Mt. Gox close?
The exchange stopped serving customers during a crisis over missing cryptocurrency and suspended withdrawals before entering Japanese court proceedings.
Mt. Gox reported in March 2014 that it had previously believed approximately 850,000 BTC had disappeared. That included roughly 750,000 BTC associated with customers and 100,000 BTC belonging to the company.
The company later found approximately 200,000 BTC in an old-format wallet, revising its estimate of missing holdings to around 650,000 BTC.
Those numbers come from the company's own March 20, 2014 statement. Mt. Gox said the cause and exact quantity were still under investigation. They are not an estimate of the Bitcoin still owed to creditors in 2026.
How did bankruptcy become civil rehabilitation?
The business initially entered proceedings that ultimately led to bankruptcy administration. Creditors subsequently sought civil rehabilitation, which offered a different framework for treating their Bitcoin claims.
On June 22, 2018, the Tokyo District Court ordered civil rehabilitation proceedings to commence. The earlier bankruptcy proceedings were stayed.
Nobuaki Kobayashi was appointed civil rehabilitation trustee. He remained responsible for administering assets and examining claims under court supervision.
The 2018 trustee FAQ explained an important distinction: under the new rehabilitation process, Bitcoin claims were not automatically converted into monetary claims at the commencement of those proceedings.
The later court-approved rehabilitation plan set rules for claims, valuations, repayment options and eligible distributions. None of that reopened Mt. Gox as a functioning exchange.
When did Mt. Gox start paying creditors?
The trustee began making Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash repayments through designated cryptocurrency exchanges on July 5, 2024.
These were repayments to eligible rehabilitation creditors. They were not ordinary exchange withdrawals.
By July 31, 2024, more than 17,000 creditors had received Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash repayments, according to the trustee.
In the March 27, 2025 update, that total rose to more than 19,500 rehabilitation creditors. The trustee also reported making cash repayments from the proceeds of Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash sales to some eligible creditors.
A creditor counted as having received a cryptocurrency repayment is not necessarily a person who recovered every asset originally held on the platform.

The final date is still in the future as of this article's October 2026 review. It should not be presented as a guarantee that every individual creditor will receive a payment on that day.
Why are repayments still outstanding?
The October 27, 2025 trustee announcement said most base, early lump-sum and intermediate repayments had been completed for creditors who had finished the required procedures and experienced no problems, except for certain types of payments.
But many creditors had not completed the procedures. Others faced problems during repayment processing.
The Tokyo District Court authorized the trustee to move the deadline from October 31, 2025 to October 31, 2026.
The March 2025 repayment notice identified further conditions. These included correcting registered information, validating accounts, agreements with designated exchanges and ensuring transfers could be made safely.
The trustee's deadline does not override those case-specific requirements.
Can former Mt. Gox customers still file claims?
The official trustee website says the deadline for selecting repayment methods and registering recipient information expired on April 6, 2023, Japan time. That is a historical deadline.
It is distinct from the October 31, 2026 repayment deadline.
The trustee's public announcements do not establish that a fresh claims-registration period has opened. Creditors with existing claims should use the official online claims system and inquiry form to check their particular circumstances.
The trustee has warned about fake Mt. Gox websites and impersonation emails. Unsolicited messages promising faster repayment should not be treated as official instructions.
Did creditors recover all their Bitcoin?
The public repayment counts do not answer that question.
The rehabilitation plan contains rules for accepted claims and how cash or cryptocurrency payments are calculated. Options may differ among creditors.
There is no basis for dividing the more than 19,500 cryptocurrency repayment recipients by an assumed total customer population to calculate a recovery rate. Nor can the original 2014 missing-Bitcoin estimate be treated as the trustee's current shortfall.
Mt. Gox also differs from more recent failures. The FTX bankruptcy uses US insolvency and claims procedures, whereas Mt. Gox's long-running distributions are administered through Japanese civil rehabilitation.
Finlazo's closed crypto exchanges record tracks these cases separately.
For anyone considering buying cryptocurrency, custody, withdrawal terms and provider availability remain important. Finlazo does not administer Mt. Gox creditor claims or recover funds from the closed exchange.
