Best Crypto Exchanges in Ethiopia (2026): ETB Restrictions, P2P Closures and Costs
Ethiopia's crypto exchange outlook in 2026: ETB P2P closures at OKX, MEXC, Binance and Bitget, NBE restrictions, Telebirr, cards and custody.

On this page
Ethiopia does not have the same crypto buying market as Kenya or Ghana. The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) prohibited birr-paired P2P cryptocurrency trades on 27 February 2026. It then reaffirmed broader restrictions on virtual-asset transactions in July 2026, unless the central bank expressly authorises the activity.
Those restrictions affect how this guide ranks exchanges. A platform may have global Bitcoin trading, a working website or a foreign licence. None of those proves that a person in Ethiopia can lawfully buy Bitcoin with ETB, Telebirr, CBE Birr or M-Pesa.
Several platforms removed their ETB marketplaces during 2026. The documented exits include OKX in May and MEXC in June. Bitget also published a notice ending ETB P2P support. We found no current operator evidence establishing an NBE-authorised consumer exchange with direct ETB crypto buying and cash-out.
This research compares the documented platform changes. It does not recommend circumventing local restrictions. Start with our Ethiopia cryptocurrency overview, then consult the Ethiopia crypto exchange directory for source-linked records.
Best crypto exchanges in Ethiopia: what works in 2026?
The central question is legal authorisation, not an advertised trading fee. An offshore exchange with deep BTC liquidity is not necessarily an available Ethiopian birr on-ramp. Likewise, a generic card checkout is not evidence of an NBE-approved ETB purchase.
| Platform | Evidence concerning ETB | Latest documented change | Should it be treated as an authorised ETB crypto buying service? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Binance | Reported suspension of ETB P2P | May 2026 ETB suspension; platform access reportedly restored without birr trading | No: restored website access does not restore ETB payments or establish NBE approval |
| OKX | ETB P2P formally withdrawn | 4 May 2026 | No: official ETB buy and sell P2P support ended |
| Bitget | ETB P2P discontinuation notice | 7 May 2026 notice | No: the ETB marketplace was discontinued |
| MEXC | Formal ETB P2P removal | 10 June 2026 | No: ETB advertisements and trading ended |
| Bybit | Formerly associated with ETB P2P | Current ETB payment restoration not independently verified | No verified NBE-authorised ETB route |
| KuCoin | International trading platform | Current ETB deposit, payout and authorisation not verified | No verified NBE-authorised ETB route |
The table is a historical and regulatory comparison, not a list of approved purchases. We have no basis to call any of the six the best compliant way to buy crypto with Ethiopian birr. It would be misleading to assign a conventional winner.
A platform accepting customers abroad is different from offering a regulated service in Ethiopia. Customers should verify authorisation for the exact payment and crypto activity. The National Bank of Ethiopia's February notice makes the restriction explicit.
What the National Bank of Ethiopia actually prohibited
On 27 February 2026, the NBE stated that ETB-paired peer-to-peer cryptocurrency transactions were not permitted without express permission. It referred to trading platforms, exchanges and similar services. The notice also discussed volatility, fraud and foreign-exchange manipulation.
The 23 July 2026 notice, reported by The Reporter, went further in its description of restricted activity. It covered the purchase, sale, exchange, transfer, settlement, custody and facilitation of virtual assets, unless expressly authorised. It also addressed activity involving virtual assets other than cryptocurrencies.
A legal analysis by Dablo Law Firm stresses that the notice must be read with the existing legal framework. The bank's warning is not itself a complete new statute. The operative test remains express NBE authorisation for the relevant activity.
We did not identify an NBE authorisation establishing an open retail ETB on-ramp among the platforms compared. That does not mean nobody in Ethiopia holds a blockchain asset. It means a website, foreign registration or payment screenshot cannot be substituted for local regulatory evidence.
For more detail, see Finlazo's Ethiopia cryptocurrency regulation guide and the Africa crypto regulation hub.
Binance: website access does not mean ETB buying has returned
Binance was formerly associated with a major Ethiopian birr P2P market. In May 2026, industry coverage reported that it suspended ETB trading following the NBE restrictions. The change affected local-currency payment access.
A later report carried on Binance Square said website and application access had returned. Crucially, it stated that birr-paired trading and payment methods had not been reinstated. Binance Square hosts third-party content, so this is not an official Binance licence confirmation.
A user who can reach the website should not assume ETB deposits, Telebirr settlement or ETB cash-out are operational. Nor does access prove that an activity is permitted under the July NBE notice. The February public notice still matters.
This is why a generic international exchange ranking performs badly in Ethiopia. Large global trading volume is unrelated to proof of an authorised local payment route. We do not recommend Binance as a working ETB crypto on-ramp.
OKX: four ETB P2P pairs removed
OKX's 30 April 2026 notice set 4 May 2026 as the end of ETB P2P trading. The affected markets included USDT/ETB, BTC/ETB, ETH/ETB and USDC/ETB. Existing advertisements were taken offline.
Its notice said new ETB advertisements could no longer be posted. Pending orders could finish or be cancelled under the closure procedure. It explicitly stopped buying and selling crypto with ETB in the P2P marketplace.
The removal of local fiat does not mean OKX ceased to exist globally. It means an Ethiopian birr buyer cannot infer local access from OKX's international marketing. A compliant ETB alternative requires its own evidence and authorisation.
Bitget: an ETB P2P discontinuation notice
Bitget's announcement archive dated 7 May 2026 lists a notice on the discontinuation of Ethiopian birr support. That is stronger evidence than a third-party directory's old ETB button. It documents a withdrawal from the relevant local-currency market.
The archive entry does not itself provide a fresh, account-specific ETB trading or withdrawal quote. We therefore do not substitute generic Bitget spot fees for an Ethiopian purchasing price. A global commission cannot solve the local legal restriction.
Some card-buying pages may display Ethiopian birr conversions. Those displays are not proof that an Ethiopian-issued card can complete the payment. They also do not establish permission from the NBE.
MEXC: ETB P2P delisted in June
MEXC's official announcement of 15 May 2026 said Ethiopian birr P2P trading would end on 10 June 2026. It also said active ETB advertisements would be removed. Open orders and appeals could continue until resolution.
MEXC distinguished the ETB P2P closure from its other products. That distinction is important. A global exchange remaining online does not mean a local-currency market remains open.
Customers should not treat leftover search-engine results, old tutorials or expired adverts as a working ETB funding method. The exchange's direct notice and NBE restrictions are more authoritative.
Bybit and KuCoin: do not confuse unverified access with approval
Bybit and KuCoin have international cryptocurrency trading products. But we did not find evidence of an NBE-authorised ETB crypto deposit and withdrawal service at either exchange. We also did not independently execute account eligibility checks.
That means their absence from the confirmed closure table is not evidence of permission. Nor should they be labelled safe local-currency alternatives. The NBE February notice applies to birr-paired transactions regardless of the website used.
International custody and trading fees can still be researched as background. They cannot be converted into a meaningful “best ETB exchange” score while the funding route is unverified and authorisation is missing.
Chart 1: the ETB P2P closure timeline
Several operators removed ETB markets after the NBE's 27 February notice. The chart shows calendar days from that date to three documented platform cutoff dates. It measures how quickly the marketplaces changed, not how fast money could move.
| Category | Value (calendar days) |
|---|---|
| OKX, 4 May | 66 |
| Binance, 15 May (reported) | 77 |
| MEXC, 10 June | 103 |
4 May, 15 May and 10 June 2026 correspond to 66, 77 and 103 calendar days after 27 February. Binance date comes from contemporaneous reporting, unlike the other operator notices.
Source: NBE notice, 27 February 2026; OKX closure; Binance closure report; MEXC closure
| Exchange | Cutoff date | Source | Implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| OKX | 4 May 2026 | Operator notice | ETB P2P buying and selling stopped |
| Bitget | 7 May 2026 announcement | Operator announcement archive | ETB P2P discontinuation announced |
| Binance | 15 May 2026 (reported) | Industry report | ETB services suspended |
| MEXC | 10 June 2026 | Operator notice | ETB advertisements removed |
A closure date should not be interpreted as a regulatory licence expiry. These are operator product changes. The central bank's broader July warning is a separate and more consequential source.
Ethiopia's mobile-money economy is growing despite the crypto restrictions
Ethio telecom reported 2.61 billion Telebirr transactions in its 2025/26 financial year. Their combined value reached ETB 4.19 trillion. Telebirr also reported 60.6 million registered customers and 19.48 million users active over 90 days.
A year earlier, Ethio telecom reported 1.06 billion transactions and ETB 2.38 trillion in value. The latest transaction count therefore increased substantially. This is evidence of growth in licensed digital payments.
These numbers do not measure crypto purchases. Telebirr is a regulated mobile-money service, not a virtual-asset exchange. The July NBE position cannot be overridden by a wallet's widespread adoption.
Chart 2: Telebirr annual payment volume more than doubled
The data comes from Ethio telecom's two annual business reports. The 2024/25 and 2025/26 periods are the operator's fiscal years. Values are rounded as published.
| Category | Value (billion transactions) |
|---|---|
| 2024/25 | 1.06 |
| 2025/26 | 2.61 |
All Telebirr transactions across ordinary financial services. Not cryptocurrency transaction volume. Different from unique customer counts.

| Fiscal year | Reported Telebirr transactions | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| 2024/25 | 1.06 billion | All operator mobile-money transactions |
| 2025/26 | 2.61 billion | All operator mobile-money transactions |
The increase is around 146% based on the displayed rounded counts. Ethio telecom itself reported year-on-year growth of 145.3%, using underlying data. The small difference is due to rounding.
Chart 3: total value processed through Telebirr
Transaction value also rose. The 2025/26 operator report says the platform processed ETB 4.19 trillion. Its earlier 2024/25 report put the figure at ETB 2.38 trillion.
| Category | Value (ETB trillion) |
|---|---|
| 2024/25 | 2.38 |
| 2025/26 | 4.19 |
Domestic and authorised mobile-money financial activity, not ETB-funded cryptocurrency transfers. Published figures rounded.

| 2024/25 | ETB 2.38 trillion | Base year |
| 2025/26 | ETB 4.19 trillion | 76.2% annual growth |
Digital-payment growth and crypto authorisation are separate subjects. Ethiopia can have a fast-growing mobile-money system while restricting virtual-asset transactions. Our Ethiopia cross-border payments analysis discusses the regulated settlement rails.
Telebirr, M-Pesa Ethiopia and CBE Birr are not authorised crypto checkout rails
Telebirr is operated within Ethiopia's regulated payment system. Ethio telecom's 2025/26 report describes cash-in, cash-out, bill payments and bank integrations. None of those features automatically authorises purchases of BTC or USDT.
M-Pesa Ethiopia and CBE Birr are different services from Kenyan M-Pesa and the exchange P2P escrow system. They can be used for permitted financial transfers. That does not make an unofficial crypto dealer's wallet a regulated purchase gateway.
The distinction is especially important when online guides encourage customers to send ETB to a third party for stablecoins. The NBE specifically prohibited birr-paired P2P cryptocurrency exchange. The wider July notice addresses other virtual-asset activities without express approval.
For ordinary remittances, our guides cover transfers to Telebirr, CBE Birr and Ethiopian bank accounts. These links describe conventional payment methods, not ways to fund prohibited crypto trades.
Why Paybis, Mercuryo, Banxa and Changelly are not ETB alternatives
Paybis documents cards, bank transfers and selected alternative methods. Mercuryo's guide lists Visa, Mastercard and digital payment methods. Such payment options depend on country, issuing bank and partner eligibility.
Banxa's payment-method catalogue is also country-specific. It directs integrators to supported currencies and payment methods. Changelly uses partner checkout services for fiat purchases rather than acting as a local ETB bank.
These descriptions do not establish an NBE-approved Telebirr, CBE Birr or M-Pesa Ethiopia crypto checkout. A page displaying an ETB estimate, card symbol or conversion rate should not be treated as proof that an Ethiopian-issued card will settle. It certainly cannot replace local authorisation.
We also have no credible Ethiopia-specific market-share statistics showing these brands are unpopular. Their limited usefulness in this comparison is about payment compatibility and the legal restrictions, not a measured lack of users. A card payment does not provide a lawful workaround to an ETB P2P prohibition.
Why a low international trading fee is a poor ranking metric here
An international exchange may advertise a small spot commission. That rate is unrelated to the cost of acquiring crypto from Ethiopian birr. Without a documented and authorised local funding route, an all-in ETB fee comparison would be misleading.
| Question | What the evidence shows | Editorial conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Is there an official ETB P2P market? | OKX ended ETB trading; MEXC delisted ETB | Do not promote discontinued marketplaces |
| Is there a licensed local buyer/seller route? | NBE requires express authorisation | No qualifying retail operator verified in this review |
| Does an ETB card quote prove permission? | Card eligibility and local authority are separate | Do not equate an estimate with a permitted order |
| Does the global trading fee settle ETB? | Trading and funding are different products | A low crypto commission is not an ETB conversion quote |
| Can a mobile-money wallet fund crypto? | Telebirr offers regulated ordinary payments | Do not presume virtual-asset permission |
| Is the crypto held by the customer? | Custodial accounts and self-custody differ | Address custody, withdrawal and key risks separately |
If a future regulated crypto operator receives explicit approval, its legal entity and authorisation must be checked. The next questions would concern bank funding, network fees, custody, quoted rates and consumer protections. Those comparisons cannot be completed responsibly with today's evidence.
Custody and existing balances: another risk beyond funding
On custodial exchanges, the operator generally holds wallet private keys. A user with an existing balance may see tokens even when their local currency option has disappeared. The existence of a balance does not clarify whether transferring, converting or withdrawing it is permitted under the applicable rules.
The July NBE statement, explained by local legal advisers, covers transfer and safekeeping or administration activities unless authorised. Customers with existing assets should seek guidance appropriate to their circumstances. Do not assume that self-custody, another coin or a different platform removes legal obligations.
Blockchain transactions also carry ordinary technical risks. A mistaken address or incompatible network can cause irreversible loss. Custodial platform restrictions may make recovery more difficult.
Is Bitcoin mining different from crypto exchange trading?
Bitcoin mining involves computational activity and energy supply. It should be assessed separately from ETB-funded P2P buying. The NBE notices examined here concern virtual-asset activities and require attention to the actual activity being conducted.
Do not use reports of commercial mining operations as evidence that retail ETB trading has become lawful. Contracts involving electricity, imports or industrial investment do not automatically authorise a consumer exchange. Our Ethiopia crypto market research discusses mining and adoption separately.
What an honest Ethiopia exchange directory should show
A country directory should distinguish “platform exists internationally” from “ETB trading is operational.” It should also distinguish a documented ETB shutdown from a lack of reliable evidence. Those are different findings.
The Ethiopia exchange directory should therefore treat Binance, OKX, Bitget and MEXC as historical or restricted ETB references. Bybit and KuCoin require verification, not positive availability claims. None should be marked as locally authorised without NBE evidence.
The same principle applies across borders. Our Kenya exchange comparison and Tanzania exchange comparison cover different payment conditions. A route working in Nairobi or Dar es Salaam does not establish permission in Addis Ababa.

Which exchange is best for Ethiopia in October 2026?
We cannot responsibly name a best approved ETB crypto exchange. The NBE's February notice restricted birr-paired P2P transactions, and its July statement reiterated wider rules. Major exchanges removed ETB support during the year.
OKX and MEXC provide especially clear primary-source closure dates. Binance's withdrawal is documented in reporting, while Bitget has a discontinuation notice. An international platform with no verified direct ETB funding and NBE approval cannot fill that gap.
The most useful current choice is to distinguish regulated mobile-money activity from restricted virtual-asset services. Any new authorisation should be verified directly with the NBE. An earlier exchange ranking cannot substitute for that evidence.
Methodology and conclusions
Finlazo reviewed the NBE February notice, coverage of its July restriction, exchange delisting announcements and Ethio telecom's 2025/26 report on 24 October 2026. The timeline chart uses dates from operator notices and labelled secondary coverage. The payment charts use financial-year data, not estimates of crypto adoption.
We did not create local ETB crypto orders, test international cards or verify a provider as NBE-authorised. Fees, access and approval could change. No illegal or prohibited payment workaround is recommended.
For source-linked updates, use the Ethiopia exchange directory and Ethiopia regulation article. The conclusion is about verified evidence and current restrictions, not the popularity of exchange brands.
