Best Crypto Exchanges in Tanzania (2026): TZS, Mobile Money, P2P Fees and Custody
Compare Binance, VALR, KuCoin, OKX and MEXC in Tanzania: TZS mobile money, P2P rates, withdrawal costs, custody and local regulation.

The Bank of Tanzania's official payment-system report says cryptocurrency is not legally prohibited. It also says regulated payment providers are restricted from issuing, distributing or settling virtual assets. This creates an important distinction between trading crypto and being licensed to process payments.
Tanzanians can access documented cryptocurrency services through direct mobile-money purchases and peer-to-peer (P2P) offers. Yet a TZS trading page does not guarantee account eligibility or a bank withdrawal. The best platform depends on the final quote, custody, cash-out options and applicable local rules.
This guide compares Binance, VALR, KuCoin, OKX and MEXC. We examine fees and payment routes using first-party documentation. Readers can explore the Tanzania exchange directory and our Tanzania cryptocurrency market overview for additional context.
The Bank of Tanzania's 2025 payment-systems report records 75,775,654 active mobile-money users and 2.63 million active international-brand cards. These indicators use different counting methods. They are not a direct measure of unique users or crypto payments, but they explain why this guide prioritises local shilling and mobile-money routes.
Which crypto exchanges accept Tanzanian shillings?
These five platforms have documented TZS routes. Two offer partner-facilitated purchases. Three have TZS P2P markets where advertisers set the shilling price.
| Platform | Documented TZS service | Type | Fee comparison | Important restriction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Binance | TZS mobile-money crypto purchases | Payment-partner checkout | Stated 2% buying fee | Live access and quote must be verified |
| VALR | TZS mobile money through Onafriq | Direct purchase/deposit integration | Conversion and processing fees can apply | US$300 per mobile-money transaction |
| KuCoin | TZS/USDT P2P marketplace | Advertiser-to-buyer trade | Advertiser spread and payment costs | Payment methods and offer limits change |
| OKX | TZS/USDT P2P market | Escrow-mediated trade | Advertiser spread; operator advertises zero P2P platform fees | A public market page is not a guaranteed eligible offer |
| MEXC | Operator announced TZS P2P for USDT, BTC, ETH and USDC on 20 April 2026 | P2P marketplace | Zero P2P platform fees advertised; advertiser spreads and payment charges remain | Confirm a live TZS offer and payment method |
A direct crypto checkout is different from P2P. A payment partner processes the first type. In P2P, the shillings move between customers, while the platform facilitates a crypto order.
Binance: TZS mobile money with published buying and selling fees
Binance's mobile-money instructions identify Tanzanian shillings and networks such as Vodacom, Tigo, Airtel and Halopesa. The operator documents an integration using payment partners. It also provides separate TZS selling instructions.
Its published Tanzania fee table shows 2% for buying. The selling guidance lists TZS 2,500 for a mobile-money sell. These are different types of charges and should not be confused.
A purchase also has an exchange rate. Customers need to compare the BTC or USDT delivered after any fees. They should verify the payment recipient and applicable limits inside the live account.
Chart 1: how Binance's 2% TZS buying fee scales
The following figures apply the documented 2% fee to hypothetical purchases. They are arithmetic examples, not observed transactions. Exchange-rate spreads and other payment charges are excluded.
| Category | Value (TZS) |
|---|---|
| TZS 50,000 purchase | 1000 |
| TZS 250,000 purchase | 5000 |
| TZS 1,000,000 purchase | 20000 |
Illustrative arithmetic, not live prices. Payment and account limits may prevent these order sizes. Excludes spreads and third-party charges.
Source: Binance TZS mobile-money fee schedule; Finlazo calculations
| Hypothetical purchase | Published buying fee | Calculated charge |
|---|---|---|
| TZS 50,000 | 2% | TZS 1,000 |
| TZS 250,000 | 2% | TZS 5,000 |
| TZS 1,000,000 | 2% | TZS 20,000 |
These amounts are not all-in crypto prices. A buyer must inspect the actual order confirmation. What matters is the asset quantity credited after the complete purchase.
VALR: buying crypto through Onafriq
VALR documents TZS mobile-money deposits and purchases through its Onafriq integration. The provider supports routes in which local funds convert to a stablecoin. Some purchases then convert the stablecoin into the chosen crypto asset.
The VALR guide states a US$300 maximum for a mobile-money transaction. It also explains that payment processing and crypto conversion may involve separate fees. That means a quoted headline trading fee alone is insufficient.
Its cited funding instructions do not establish an equivalent TZS mobile-money withdrawal route. Users should check the current sell and cash-out options before depositing. A supported buy route does not promise a matching exit.
KuCoin: TZS P2P and changing mobile-money offers
KuCoin publishes a TZS/USDT P2P marketplace. Advertisers can specify eligible methods, including local bank and mobile-money options. The customer pays an advertiser, not a KuCoin-controlled TZS wallet.
P2P orders have seller prices, limits and payment instructions. The seller's crypto is held through the order process. The buyer must follow the platform's confirmation and appeal rules.
A low headline fee does not ensure a favourable price. Advertisers can incorporate their margin into the shilling rate. Users should also check whether their own payment account name meets the marketplace requirements.
OKX: documented TZS marketplace, not guaranteed execution
OKX has a TZS/USDT P2P market and explains the peer-to-peer trading model. It advertises zero platform fees for P2P. Its crypto escrow does not remove the need to verify the seller or payment instructions.
The market listing does not establish a direct OKX mobile-money deposit. Nor does it promise a current offer to every Tanzanian customer. Availability varies with identity verification and advertiser inventory.
MEXC: TZS P2P added in April 2026
MEXC announced Tanzanian shilling support on 20 April 2026. It lists USDT, BTC, ETH and USDC for peer-to-peer trades. The operator also advertises zero P2P transaction fees.
That does not mean buying crypto costs nothing. Advertisers choose the TZS rate, amount limits and available payment methods. Check the live order, account eligibility and any mobile-money transfer charge.
This is a marketplace, not a direct exchange deposit of shillings. We have not independently verified today's seller inventory. Nor does the announcement establish authorisation from the Bank of Tanzania.
Chart 2: fixed TZS selling charges on small and large payouts
The Binance TZS mobile-money sell fee is stated as TZS 2,500. A fixed fee consumes a larger share of a small payout. The chart divides that charge by three illustrative gross selling amounts.
| Category | Value (%) |
|---|---|
| TZS 50,000 cash-out | 5 |
| TZS 250,000 cash-out | 1 |
| TZS 1,000,000 cash-out | 0.25 |
Hypothetical gross TZS payouts. Other conversion, spread and payment costs are excluded. These are not tested transactions.

| Illustrative gross cash-out | Stated fee | Share of cash-out | Before other charges |
|---|---|---|---|
| TZS 50,000 | TZS 2,500 | 5% | TZS 47,500 |
| TZS 250,000 | TZS 2,500 | 1% | TZS 247,500 |
| TZS 1,000,000 | TZS 2,500 | 0.25% | TZS 997,500 |
Actual payout limits and charges need confirmation. A platform may apply its fee before sending shillings. The customer's final mobile-money credit is the meaningful number.
Chart 3: the real impact of a P2P exchange-rate spread
Imagine three advertisers offering USDT at TZS 2,500, 2,600 and 2,700. Buying 100 USDT would cost TZS 250,000, 260,000 or 270,000. These are invented rates for illustration, not observed live offers.
| Category | Value (TZS) |
|---|---|
| At TZS 2,500 per USDT | 250000 |
| At TZS 2,600 per USDT | 260000 |
| At TZS 2,700 per USDT | 270000 |
Example exchange rates are hypothetical and do not represent measured offers. Excludes funding and withdrawal costs.
Source: Finlazo hypothetical calculations; KuCoin TZS offers and OKX TZS market illustrate the advertiser-quote model
| Hypothetical P2P rate | Total for 100 USDT | Extra against lowest quote |
|---|---|---|
| TZS 2,500 per USDT | TZS 250,000 | TZS 0 |
| TZS 2,600 per USDT | TZS 260,000 | TZS 10,000 |
| TZS 2,700 per USDT | TZS 270,000 | TZS 20,000 |
The TZS 20,000 difference is part of the price, not an extra trading-fee invoice. That is why total payment matters more than a zero-fee label. Compare executable quotes at similar times and sizes.
M-Pesa, Airtel Money and Tigo Pesa: payment-route differences
Mobile money can fund crypto in different ways. Binance and VALR document payment integrations. KuCoin P2P advertisers may instead ask a buyer to transfer money to an individual wallet.
The recipient and dispute process differ. Do not send shillings to unrelated contacts outside a confirmed order. Always verify the intended payment account and transaction details.
Our M-Pesa versus P2P explainer covers escrow and payment-name controls. Its Kenyan payment tariffs must not be applied to Tanzania. For traditional payment routes, see our guides to M-Pesa Tanzania, Airtel Money Tanzania and Tigo Pesa Tanzania.
Why Mercuryo and Paybis are not main Tanzania picks
International on-ramps can be useful for people who have eligible cards. Mercuryo's payment-method guide lists Visa, Mastercard and several other international payment options. It does not establish a dedicated TZS mobile-money checkout.
Paybis lists cards, bank transfers and alternative methods. Its M-Pesa documentation identifies Kenya, not a verified Tanzanian TZS payment route. We therefore treat both as secondary options rather than equal substitutes for locally documented TZS services.
That choice reflects the payment infrastructure, not a claim that Tanzanians never use cards. The Bank of Tanzania's 2025 payment-system indicators show far more active mobile-money users than active international-brand cards, although the units are not directly comparable. An individual buyer should still check the payment method available to their account.
Custody: what happens after buying Bitcoin?
A crypto exchange may hold the private keys while showing a user an account balance. A P2P order typically delivers assets into the marketplace's custodial account after escrow release. That is different from controlling an external wallet.
Moving Bitcoin into self-custody usually requires a blockchain withdrawal. The destination network must match the asset and the wallet. Exchange withdrawal fees, limits and confirmations should be checked before the purchase.
| Custody option | Key control | Main risk | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange | Platform | Account restrictions, platform failure | Availability of external crypto withdrawals |
| P2P order settled to platform | Platform after order release | Counterparty dispute and ongoing custody | Payment confirmation and escrow release |
| Personal self-custody wallet | Wallet holder | Seed loss or wrong-network transfer | Address, network, recovery and fee |
Our wallet guide explains the difference between an exchange balance and self-custody. Its examples use Kenya, but the key-control principles apply more widely.
Tanzania's legal framework and exchange licensing
The Bank of Tanzania's payment-system report distinguishes crypto trading from the legal recognition of crypto as a payment instrument. Its position restricts licensed payment providers from dealing in certain virtual-asset operations. A public TZS market listing is not a local regulatory authorisation.
For background on the central bank's approach, read Cryptocurrency Regulation in Tanzania. Our Africa crypto regulation hub places Tanzania beside other jurisdictions. Do not infer a licence from an exchange's claim of international availability.
Yellow Card is a separate case. The company announced the closure of its retail app in October 2026 while focusing on businesses. Its payment infrastructure should not be listed as an open retail exchange.
How to compare the complete cost
A direct checkout, a P2P trade and a bank transfer can each have different charges. The same nominal fee may buy different quantities of crypto. A cheaper purchase may also be expensive to withdraw later.
| Compare | Direct TZS purchase | TZS P2P purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Platform conversion quote | Advertiser's TZS rate |
| Recipient | Platform payment partner | Individual advertiser |
| Added costs | Processing and conversion | Spread and mobile-money transfer |
| Crypto custody | Exchange account until withdrawal | Exchange account after escrow |
| TZS exit | Verify documented payout | Find a seller/buyer offer |
| External wallet | Network fee and minimum | Network fee and minimum |
Use the same TZS amount to request two quotes. Record how much BTC or USDT would reach the account. Then preview a transfer to the same compatible external network.
If the goal is cross-border remittances, a cryptocurrency purchase may not be the most suitable product. Our Tanzania cross-border payments analysis and South Africa–Tanzania corridor guide explain different settlement models. Crypto and ordinary remittances may have different rules and consumer protections.
Which Tanzania exchange is the best choice?
For a documented TZS mobile-money purchase with a published local fee table, Binance offers useful information to compare. VALR is another documented mobile-money route, with a stated US$300 transaction maximum. Current payment eligibility and the all-in quote remain essential.
KuCoin, OKX and MEXC are worth researching for TZS P2P. Advertisers set the available payment methods, trading limits and rates. Customers should compare the actual offer rather than rely on a platform's generic fee claim.
There is no verified single winner for all Tanzanian users. Choose by asset delivered, cash-out route, custody and legal eligibility. A marketplace listing is not proof of Bank of Tanzania approval.
Methodology and conclusion
This review uses operator documentation and central-bank publications examined on 24 October 2026. Two charts show fee arithmetic from Binance's stated TZS charges. One chart uses explicitly hypothetical P2P rates.
We did not execute real payments or verify individual accounts. Payment availability and fees can change without notice. The Tanzania crypto exchange directory provides a route back to each operator's source.
