Chainalysis estimated that Canada processed $247.7 billion in cryptocurrency activity between July 2025 and June 2026, an increase of 2.3% from the previous year. Its October 2026 report ranked Canada tenth in its global grassroots crypto adoption index. These are Chainalysis estimates, not Canadians' total crypto holdings.

Regulatory scrutiny is substantial. The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) issued 763 investor alerts, cautions and warnings in 2025–26, with more than 85% relating to crypto assets. The figures make legal status a practical starting point when choosing an exchange.

This comparison reviews seven platforms with documented Canadian regulatory standing. We examine actual trading charges, CAD funding, asset selection and custody. The aim is to show which service fits a particular need, not to claim one exchange is safest for everyone.

This is a comparison by use case, not a league table based on undisclosed scores. Quoted charges refer to specified trading interfaces; bank, network and withdrawal costs can change the final amount received. Verify the current order preview before trading.

Other names on the CSA authorised-platform register include Crypto.com, Netcoins and Webull Canada Crypto. Their omission from this focused comparison is not a finding that they lack authorisation.

How we selected these Canadian crypto exchanges

Our first filter was securities-regulator status, not an advertisement or an affiliate ranking. The CSA's authorised-platform list, updated 18 September 2026, names the legal companies and their regulatory decisions.

Next came published pricing and account features. We looked for primary fee schedules, Canadian-dollar funding routes and clear withdrawal terms. We did not conduct live account transactions, independently audit reserves or measure execution spreads in real time.

FINTRAC registration is relevant to anti-money-laundering controls. It is not itself approval to operate a securities-regulated exchange. Our separate guide to cryptocurrency regulation in Canada explains how FINTRAC, provincial securities regulators and the Bank of Canada divide responsibilities.

Ndax: a clear flat-fee option

Ndax publishes a flat 0.20% trading fee on every buy and sell order. It does not use a volume-based maker/taker schedule. A C$1,000 trade would therefore incur C$2 in the published trading commission.

The company says Interac e-Transfer and wire deposits are free. Its listed CAD cash-out charges are C$1.50 for Interac and C$4.99 for EFT. Cryptocurrency withdrawals have separate asset- and network-specific fees.

Ndax Canada Inc. identifies itself as an investment dealer and CIRO member. Its disclosures also warn that Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF) coverage does not extend to crypto assets. Customers should not confuse securities-regulator oversight with deposit insurance for their coins.

Kraken: more control for experienced traders

Kraken offers a basic buying interface and Kraken Pro order books. On Pro, maker and taker charges vary with the user's tier. The published July 2026 fee changes list an initial 0.40% maker fee and 0.80% taker fee, with lower tiers available after qualifying activity or asset balances.

Those percentages do not describe Kraken's instant-buy quote. Kraken's October 2026 fee explanation distinguishes order-book trading from simple purchases and sets out how tiers work.

The CSA identifies Payward Canada Inc. as the relevant authorised entity. Advanced charting may suit active traders, but a customer should compare the actual CAD pair, order type, available deposit route and withdrawal network before selecting Kraken.

Coinbase Canada: simple purchases or advanced execution

Coinbase Canada advertises more than 200 crypto assets, along with Interac e-Transfer and EFT account funding. Its two trading interfaces deserve separate cost checks. The standard purchase screen offers a quoted buy price that can include a spread and fees.

Coinbase Advanced uses maker/taker pricing. The actual rate depends on the account's tier and the traded market. Coinbase says users can view their applicable fees within their account and before placing the order.

Coinbase Canada Inc. appears on the CSA's authorised list. The April 1, 2026 amended decision is newer than its April 2024 original decision. Users should review the legal entity and provincial restrictions, not just the Coinbase brand.

Newton: easy funding, but compare the trading charge

Newton documents free Interac deposits and withdrawals and free EFT withdrawals. For standard-tier users, the published trading fee for Bitcoin, Ether and USDC ranges from 1.00% to 1.15%. Other tokens can have higher rates.

Newton offers several blockchain withdrawal routes. Its fee guidance lists a delayed free option for certain Bitcoin and Ethereum-network transfers, alongside paid or network-fee-based faster options. Actual timing and eligibility should be checked when withdrawing.

Newton Crypto Ltd. appears on the CSA register, including March 2026 amended decisions. A free CAD deposit does not mean the crypto purchase is free; compare the trade fee and the amount of crypto delivered.

Wealthsimple Crypto: one place for investment accounts

Wealthsimple lets customers access crypto within a broader Canadian investing service. Its fee schedule updated 24 September 2026 sets a 0.50% baseline trading charge for ordinary clients. Market orders may also include a variable spread, while limit orders avoid that quoted spread.

The same document adds a C$1 surcharge for individual CAD crypto orders below C$100. Qualifying active traders can access lower rates at specified volume thresholds. Those details matter for customers making repeated small purchases.

Wealthsimple Investments Inc. appears on the CSA list. Users who already manage other investments through Wealthsimple may value account convenience. They should still assess crypto custody and transaction charges separately from their stock or cash products.

Shakepay: a straightforward approach to recurring Bitcoin purchases

Shakepay says it charges no separate commission for ordinary crypto buys and sells. Instead, it earns revenue through the spread between its quoted prices and a benchmark. Its pricing explanation targets a 0.5%–2.0% spread, subject to conditions and possible adjustments.

There is a notable exception for scheduled Bitcoin purchases. Shakepay's March 2026 programme says eligible CAD-funded recurring or payroll auto-buys incur no fee and no spread from day eight after setup. The initial seven days and ineligible assets are excluded.

Shakepay Inc. is listed by Canadian securities regulators. Customers focused on simple Bitcoin purchases may prefer the interface, but should compare its ordinary buy quote against order-book alternatives.

Bitbuy: check the exact fee schedule before ordering

Bitbuy offers express conversion and an order-book interface. Its July 2026 public fee schedule describes spread-based express trades, free Interac CAD deposits and different withdrawal methods. The same schedule lists 0.50% fees for standard Pro orders.

There is a disclosure inconsistency worth flagging. Bitbuy's client relationship disclosure describes a different maker/taker fee structure. Because these published documents do not fully match, users should rely on the current applicable account terms and final order preview, rather than treating either figure as a universal rate.

Bitbuy is associated with Coinsquare Capital Markets Limited on the CSA register. Its legal status and pricing need to be checked separately. A regulated platform can still have fees or execution terms that do not suit a particular trade.

How much does a C$1,000 crypto purchase cost?

The table below isolates published trading charges for a C$1,000 order. It is a worked comparison, not a live quote. It excludes variable price spreads where specified, banking costs and blockchain withdrawal charges.

Platform and routePublished fee basisIllustrative trading charge
Ndax spot0.20% flatC$2.00
Kraken Pro, entry maker order0.40%C$4.00
Kraken Pro, entry taker order0.80%C$8.00

Wealthsimple, ordinary account0.50% plus possible spreadC$5.00 + any spread
Coinbase, simple buyDynamic quoteCheck final quote
Shakepay, ordinary buySpread included in priceCheck final quote
Bitbuy, ProPublished fee documents differCheck applicable terms and quote

For example, the difference between a 0.20% commission and a 1.00% charge is C$8 on a C$1,000 purchase. That difference does not prove the first exchange always delivers the better final price. Order-book depth, exchange rates and withdrawals can change the comparison.

CAD deposits: Interac e-Transfer, bank wires and cards

Interac e-Transfer is a common route for Canadian crypto customers. Ndax, Newton, Shakepay, Bitbuy and Coinbase each document Canadian-dollar funding options. Their transaction limits, processing times and supported banks can differ.

Funding method also affects price. A card purchase may be convenient but could have an additional processing cost. A free bank deposit only removes the funding charge; it says nothing about the spread on the subsequent Bitcoin purchase.

Check whether a bank transfer must come from an account in the same legal name. Also verify the minimum deposit and any withdrawal hold before sending money. These restrictions can matter more than advertised deposit speed.

Custody, proof of reserves and investor protection

A platform's Canadian securities registration is relevant, but it is not an insurance policy against Bitcoin losing value. Ndax explicitly warns that CIPF protection does not cover crypto assets. Similar protections and limitations need to be read in each operator's account agreement.

Ask where assets are held and whether users can withdraw them to private wallets. Examine the platform's custody arrangements, asset segregation disclosures and incident procedures. A displayed balance is not the same thing as possession of a private key.

Finlazo's proof-of-reserves verification guide explains what reserve disclosures can and cannot establish. Our investigations into QuadrigaCX and Einstein Exchange also document the consequences of exchange failures in Canada.

Why stablecoins matter to Canadian exchange customers

Chainalysis found that stablecoins accounted for 44% of Canadian-dollar-based crypto order-book volume in June 2026. The corresponding share was 30% in June 2025. These figures concern trading mix, not the percentage of Canadians who own USDC or USDT.

Exchange support is not uniform. A platform may permit trading in a token while restricting a particular chain or withdrawal route. Canada also has separate regulatory rules affecting value-referenced crypto assets.

Before buying USDC or another stablecoin, check token eligibility, the issuing entity and the transfer network. The Canada crypto regulation guide covers the October 2026 proposed stablecoin rules and their implementation status.

Which exchange fits a Canadian customer?

An occasional buyer may prioritise straightforward CAD deposits and clear final quotes. A frequent trader may prefer an order book with maker/taker controls and deeper liquidity. Someone saving Bitcoin for the long term may care most about withdrawal support and custody terms.

The CSA register is the first check, not the final decision. After confirming the legal entity, compare a real-time quote for the same asset and order size across two eligible platforms. Include the cost of withdrawing either CAD or crypto at the end.

What Canadian crypto users should know about tax

The Canada Revenue Agency says selling crypto for CAD or exchanging it for another crypto asset can be a taxable disposition. The outcome depends on whether gains and losses are capital or business in nature. Moving assets between wallets owned by the same taxpayer generally does not itself amount to a disposal.

Keep a record of the CAD transaction value, fees, asset quantities and trade dates. Downloading exchange statements periodically can help, especially if a platform later closes or restricts account access.

What matters when choosing a Canadian exchange

Canada has several securities-authorised crypto platforms, but they are not interchangeable. Fees depend on the trading interface, while access to specific assets and withdrawal networks can differ by province and by account.

Start with regulatory verification, then compare the final quoted cost and custody conditions for the exact transaction you intend to make. A low advertised commission is useful only when it comes with a competitive execution price and a workable exit route.
