Mobile-money transaction value in Zambia increased 83.4% in 2025, while the number of transactions rose 65.5%, according to the Bank of Zambia's 2025 Annual Report.

These statistics describe Zambia's domestic mobile-money market. They are not figures for personal remittances sent from South Africa.

Zambia also recorded K359.2 billion in cumulative merchandise trade from January to July 2026, according to the Zambia Statistics Agency. That figure covers all trading partners and is not an estimate of cross-border payments.

For a South African sender transferring money to Lusaka, Ndola, Kitwe or another Zambian city, the practical questions are simpler. Can the recipient receive mobile money, collect cash or accept a bank deposit? How many Zambian kwacha will reach them after charges?

This guide compares verified South Africa-to-Zambia payout methods, fees, exchange rates, processing times and security checks.

Ways to send money from South Africa to Zambia

Mama Money's Zambia destination page confirms direct transfers to MTN and Airtel mobile wallets. Mukuru's South African Zambia page describes cash collection and mobile-wallet payouts.

International bank transfers provide another option where the sending bank supports the recipient's account in Zambia.

Transfer methodHow the recipient gets moneyMain checks
Mobile walletCredit into a supported Zambian MTN or Airtel walletRegistered mobile number, network, limits and exchange-rate quotation
Cash pickupCollection at a verified partner locationRecipient identification, payout outlet, reference and available cash
International bank transferDeposit into an eligible Zambian bank accountFull account details, bank SWIFT/BIC, fee allocation and settlement currency
Supplier paymentCommercial payment into a business accountInvoice, verified beneficiary and correct payment purpose

A provider advertising services in Zambia does not necessarily support every payout method for every South African sender.

Compare the final quote and actual recipient method before funding.

For Zambia's underlying settlement infrastructure, read Zambia Cross-Border Payments.

1. Sending to MTN or Airtel Money Zambia

Mama Money specifically advertises transfers from South Africa into MTN and Airtel wallets.

Its mobile-wallet guide for Zambia describes transfers that can be initiated remotely, without the recipient needing a traditional bank account.

The recipient should have an active, registered wallet on the exact network selected by the sender.

Confirm the wallet holder's legal name, phone number, receiving capacity and the amount that will actually be credited.

A wallet's domestic availability is not enough to prove a cross-border route. In this case, Mama Money's route-specific instructions supply that confirmation.

Wallet withdrawals may carry separate costs. Ask the recipient whether they plan to spend the funds digitally or cash out.

2. Sending through Mukuru for cash collection

Mukuru's South Africa-to-Zambia service page lists cash collection at Mukuru booths, branches and payout partners.

Cash pickup can suit a recipient who does not have a bank account or who needs local currency in hand.

The sender should confirm the specific collection outlet and payout amount. The recipient may need identity documentation and the transfer reference.

Mukuru's official sending instructions include its app, WhatsApp and other ordering channels.

Do not assume that every listed outlet is open or has enough cash for the payment when the recipient arrives.

Mukuru also advertises mobile-wallet payouts, but the exact destination networks should be checked when placing the order.

3. Bank transfers into Zambia

An international bank transfer can be suitable for personal accounts and for businesses paying Zambian suppliers.

Standard Bank's international-payment guide says a sender generally needs the beneficiary's name and address, account number or applicable account identifier, receiving-bank SWIFT code and reason for payment.

The actual banking instructions must come from the beneficiary's Zambian bank.

A bank may request an invoice, source-of-funds documents or information explaining the payment purpose.

Standard Bank says outward international payments are processed within two business days. That is the sending bank's processing period, not a guaranteed account-crediting time in Zambia.

We'll keep detailed SWIFT instructions, intermediary-bank fees and account-number guidance for the separate Zambia bank-account article to avoid repeating the corridor hub.

For examples of nearby bank corridors, see South Africa-to-Botswana bank transfers and South Africa-to-Rwanda bank transfers.

How to send money from South Africa to Zambia: six steps

Choose the receiving method first. Then find an authorised provider with a confirmed South Africa-funded route to that specific wallet, bank or cash location.

How to send money from South Africa to Zambia: six steps

Choose a supported receiving method, verify the provider and recipient, compare exchange rates and charges, submit funds and confirm payout.

  1. Choose how the Zambian recipient will receive money

Ask whether the recipient prefers a registered MTN or Airtel wallet, collection at an approved cash outlet, or credit to an eligible Zambian bank account.

  2. Find a service supporting South Africa-funded transfers to Zambia

Check live route availability with a provider such as Mama Money or Mukuru, or your authorised bank. Confirm that the exact recipient method and transaction purpose are supported.

  3. Register and complete the sender's identification

Open the provider's official app or service and complete the required identification and any source-of-funds or payment-purpose declarations.

  4. Confirm the recipient's details and payout location

Enter the beneficiary's exact registered name, mobile wallet network and number, or verified bank details and routing code. For cash, confirm the approved collection outlet.

  5. Compare total ZAR cost, ZMW payout and limits

Review the provider fee, actual exchange rate, amount received, possible cash-out or intermediary fees, any recipient TPIN requirements, and the sender's and recipient's limits.

  6. Fund, track and confirm successful receipt

Pay using an available method, keep the transaction reference, and verify the recipient receives the correct amount. For delays, contact the original sending provider before attempting another payment.

How much does it cost to send money to Zambia?

Mama Money lists R50 as its fee example for sending R1,000 to Zambia. For a R10,000 transfer, it gives a fee example of R250.

The company says its fee is 5% or less and varies by amount. These are published examples, not binding live quotes for every customer or receiving method.

ChargeWhat to compare
Sender feeTotal ZAR amount charged by the remittance provider
ZAR/ZMW exchange rateRate used to convert rand into Zambian kwacha
Payout amountActual usable ZMW expected by the recipient
Wallet cash-outPossible fee charged for withdrawing mobile money
Bank and SWIFT chargesCommission or intermediary deductions on bank transfers
Funding costCharge that may depend on a particular funding method

A lower upfront transfer fee does not always mean a higher amount received in Zambia.

Compare like-for-like quotations: same sending amount, same payout method, same recipient currency and same time.

Standard Bank's international-payment terms distinguish commission, SWIFT and receiving-bank fees for outward transfers.

ZAR to ZMW: what exchange rate applies?

South Africa uses the rand (ZAR). Zambia uses the kwacha (ZMW).

A remittance company may display the sender's total cost in rand and the recipient's final payout in kwacha.

A bank payment may follow a different settlement or conversion route, depending on the receiving account and bank.

The mid-market exchange rate shown by a currency website is not necessarily the rate offered by a remittance provider.

Review the amount the recipient can actually use after currency conversion and charges.

Zambia mobile-money limits

Mama Money's Zambia page publishes different wallet limits for its Tier 1 and Tier 2 recipients.

Mama Money Zambia wallet tierPublished per-transaction maximumPublished daily maximum
Tier 1ZMW 10,000ZMW 20,000
Tier 2ZMW 20,000ZMW 100,000

The provider also publishes weekly and monthly limits, which vary by wallet tier.

These are Mama Money's advertised limits. They must not be presented as universal limits for MTN, Airtel, Mukuru or other companies.

The recipient's own wallet registration level may impose additional restrictions. Confirm a live limit before splitting or scheduling transfers.

South African sender limits and regulations

South African providers apply identity verification and applicable exchange-control requirements.

The South African Reserve Bank raised the single discretionary allowance to R2 million per calendar year in April 2026 for qualifying adult resident individuals.

That is an annual regulatory allowance, not a guarantee that a remittance provider will let one customer send R2 million to Zambia.

Mama Money publishes a standard South African sender limit of R25,000 per month, with account upgrades potentially allowing higher amounts.

The receiving wallet's limits and the sender's provider-specific limits are separate.

A business invoice, family-support payment and investment transaction may require different purpose declarations or documentation.

Use the genuine payment purpose and provide documents requested by the bank or provider.

How long does a transfer from South Africa to Zambia take?

Delivery times depend on funding confirmation, identity checks and the chosen receiving service.

Mama Money says its mobile-wallet and cash-collection transfers to Zambia are sent within minutes.

It also says its bank transfers take about five hours on average but may require up to 48 hours to reflect, depending on the receiving institution.

Those are provider statements, not guarantees for every transaction.

Mukuru advertises cash and mobile-wallet payouts, but customers should obtain a transaction-specific delivery estimate rather than assuming instant completion.

For traditional outward banking, Standard Bank specifies processing within two business days. Bank processing is distinct from final beneficiary crediting.

Recipient identification and TPIN requirements

Mama Money's Zambia FAQ says a recipient needs a TPIN for certain receiving processes.

Its FAQ also describes identification and reference-number requirements for cash collection.

Before sending, ask which recipient details the specific payout method requires. Do not assume a cash pickup has the same documentation rules as a mobile-wallet credit.

The wallet number and registered name must be correct.

Never share a mobile-money PIN, one-time password or private login credentials to claim a remittance.

A legitimate provider should not need the recipient's security PIN to complete an incoming payment.

What if a Zambia transfer is delayed or rejected?

First check whether the sender's payment has been received and accepted by the provider.

Review the recipient's mobile number, network, legal name, bank account details or cash-collection outlet.

A wallet limit, mismatch, verification request or unsupported payment method can interrupt settlement.

Save the provider's transaction reference and contact its support team for a trace or status update.

Do not send a duplicate payment merely because a recipient has not yet received an SMS confirmation.

If an unfamiliar person requests an extra fee to “unlock” funds, verify the claim through the provider's official support channels.

Personal remittances versus business payments

A personal money-transfer account may not be permitted for commercial supplier invoices.

A Zambian business paying for goods or services may need a named company account, invoices and an accurate balance-of-payments purpose.

Confirm the receiving business's legal name and bank details using a trusted contact channel.

Do not send money to a newly supplied bank account without independently verifying the change.

For general financial market context, see Zambia Cross-Border Payments. For related regional corridors, read South Africa-to-Malawi money transfers and South Africa-to-Zimbabwe transfers.

Can crypto or stablecoins replace a Zambia payout?

A digital-asset transfer is not automatically a payment into a Zambian bank or mobile wallet.

A recipient would still need an eligible conversion and payout arrangement, and any provider must comply with applicable rules.

See Zambia Cryptocurrency Regulation for the country's virtual-asset compliance context.

A crypto transfer should not be represented as guaranteed instant conversion into ZMW.

What is the best way to send money from South Africa to Zambia?

Choose a verified mobile-wallet service if the recipient actively uses MTN or Airtel Money and the quoted wallet route is available.

Choose cash collection if the recipient needs cash and a supported outlet is accessible.

Use a bank transfer when the recipient needs a direct deposit or the payment must go to an eligible business account.

Compare the provider's actual ZMW payout, charges, delivery estimate, wallet or bank limits and the recipient's needs.

Editorial review: 17 October 2026. Bank of Zambia payment-system figures describe domestic mobile-money growth; Zambia Statistics Agency trade figures describe merchandise trade. Neither is a measurement of remittances from South Africa. Provider fees, exchange rates, payout availability, limits and transfer times must be confirmed for the particular transaction. This is general information, not financial, legal or tax advice.
