Why Did LocalCryptos Close? Trading Cutoffs and Wallet Access

LocalCryptos wound down its P2P marketplace in 2022. Its trading cutoffs, company explanations and non-custodial wallet backup arrangements explained.

LocalCryptos set 18 November 2022 as the cutoff for new trades when it announced a voluntary wind-down. New accounts were to stop two weeks earlier.

The shutdown timetable allowed existing trades to finish, while users retained access to the non-custodial wallet interface.

Closing the marketplace ended a way to find counterparties and arrange trades. Access to coins depended on the wallet and escrow arrangements, rather than a promise to repay customers from an exchange balance sheet.

Why LocalCryptos decided to close

The team cited several pressures: personal health matters, an anticipated downturn in cryptocurrency markets and a difficult long-term regulatory outlook. It said no single factor explained the decision. Those reasons appear in contemporaneous reproductions of its farewell statement.

These were the company's explanations. They should not be read as a regulator's finding that LocalCryptos had broken the law, or as evidence of a court-ordered shutdown.

Reporting published on 23 October 2022 described a gradual withdrawal from the business and plans to direct traders toward other peer-to-peer platforms.

The dates applied to different services

The announced schedule separated registration from trading. These are historical dates, not current withdrawal deadlines.

Historical dateAnnounced changeWhat remained available under the plan
After 4 November 2022New account creation disabledExisting users could continue using the marketplace
After 18 November 2022New trade creation disabledOpen trades could finish; existing users could use the wallet interface

The company also said it intended to keep the wallet interface available indefinitely, according to its explanation reported at the time. That was an operational commitment made in 2022. It is not proof that the website remains accessible today.

Finlazo could not verify a working LocalCryptos homepage during checks on 16 October 2026.

What happened to customer coins?

Its Wallet Backup Explorer documentation covers both non-custodial wallets and escrow.

The open-source tool is designed to inspect a LocalCryptos wallet backup, export private keys or unlock supported escrow accounts without the marketplace interface. It requires a wallet backup file. Finding the repository alone does not establish that a particular user's coins remain available.

The documentation says its non-standard wallet algorithm makes backup files incompatible with other wallets. The explorer can export compatible private keys.

According to the project's README, cryptographic operations run in the browser and the tool does not upload private keys. That is the project's description, not an independent security audit or a guarantee of recovery.

What former users can verify now

As of 16 October 2026, the officially branded backup explorer repository remained publicly readable. It documents a technical route for people with an existing backup. This review did not identify a verified successor-platform transfer or a current liquidator-run customer claims portal.

A wallet backup, an account password and a record of an unfinished trade are different records. Users need to establish which they hold and whether the issue concerns wallet access or escrow. Neither an old account registration nor the historical trading cutoff proves that funds can now be moved.

LocalCryptos' departure also differs from the account and withdrawal arrangements described in Finlazo's reporting on LocalBitcoins and LocalMonero and AgoraDesk. Their deadlines should not be applied to a LocalCryptos wallet.

For the wider record, the closed crypto exchanges hub brings these separate exits together.

The custody question remains relevant when buying again. Readers visiting Finlazo's buy-crypto page should check the available provider's withdrawal terms and decide where they will keep the purchased crypto. That is a separate decision from accessing an old LocalCryptos wallet.
