LocalBitcoins suspended Bitcoin trading on 16 February 2023, one week after stopping new registrations. The former peer-to-peer marketplace remains closed to trading, while its website directs customers with remaining balances to request withdrawals.

For people searching for LocalBitcoins in 2026, two questions need separate answers: why the marketplace closed, and what an existing customer can still do with an old balance.

This explainer checks the closure notice and current withdrawal guidance as of 16 October 2026. The shutdown itself is a historical event.

Why did LocalBitcoins close?

LocalBitcoins cited difficult market conditions and an inability to reverse falling trading volumes and market share.

In February 2023, chief executive Nikolaus Kangas told Cointelegraph that the company had tried to restore trading volumes and declining market share to growth before deciding it could no longer provide the service.

The same report cited a latest recorded weekly trading volume of 283 BTC. That was a historical activity measure, not a figure for customer assets still held today.

The company’s explanation concerned the viability of continuing its Bitcoin marketplace. A familiar brand and a long operating history did not ensure that the trading service would remain open.

When did LocalBitcoins stop operating?

The official closure timetable separates registration, trading and later fee changes.

DateChangeEffect on customers
9 February 2023New registrations suspendedNew customers could no longer sign up
16 February 2023Trading suspendedBitcoin purchases and sales stopped
After 17 February 2023Withdrawal access remainedExisting customers could log in to withdraw
1 July 2025Maintenance fees suspendedWithdrawal transaction fees remained separate

An old login screen or support page is therefore not evidence that Bitcoin trading has restarted.

The closure notice refers to a maintenance-fee suspension lasting until the company obtains a MiCA licence. That wording does not announce a reopening date.

Can you still withdraw Bitcoin from LocalBitcoins?

LocalBitcoins’ withdrawal guidance says customers can withdraw their entire remaining balance, subject to the applicable requirements and sending fee.

Its FAQ also says that, after 30 December 2024, withdrawals are allowed only to the customer’s own self-hosted Bitcoin wallet. An exchange deposit address should not be assumed to meet that requirement.

This distinction matters. A self-hosted wallet gives its user control of the keys. A custodial platform account involves a provider controlling access to the underlying assets.

Customers should use the official account and support process to confirm the required verification. Eligibility and approval depend on the individual account.

Do not send Bitcoin to an old LocalBitcoins deposit address

The company says new deposits to old receiving addresses will not be processed or credited. An address saved in a wallet or transaction history should not be treated as a working deposit route.

The same FAQ says customers cannot sell Bitcoin there and withdraw the proceeds directly to a bank account.

Recovering an existing BTC balance, selling BTC and receiving local currency are separate actions. A withdrawal facility does not perform all three.

What fees and delays should old customers check?

LocalBitcoins’ fees page confirms the maintenance-fee suspension from 1 July 2025. It also says outgoing Bitcoin transactions carry a sending fee that can change with network conditions.

Some older FAQ wording still refers to maintenance charges. The dated suspension notice and fees page should be read alongside the account’s actual transaction records.

A balance, a fee deduction and a withdrawal request each need to be checked separately. Customers with questions about their account history should raise them through official support.

The FAQ says a request can remain pending before it is broadcast to Bitcoin’s network. Approval and broadcast are different from blockchain confirmations. The account’s status should establish which stage applies.

How should buyers compare LocalBitcoins alternatives?

A replacement service may use a different trading and custody model. Comparing only the number of payment methods can miss the more important differences.

RouteHow the transaction worksWhat to compare
P2P marketplaceBuyer trades with another user under platform rulesCounterparty terms, escrow and dispute handling
Quoted purchase serviceA provider supplies a purchase quoteTotal cost, asset amount and delivery destination
Self-hosted walletUser controls the wallet’s keysBackups, compatible networks and secure access

These are service categories, not a ranking. A self-hosted wallet is also not automatically a fiat purchase service.

Protect access while moving away from an old platform

Bitcoin.org recommends protecting wallet backups and keeping them secure. Self-custody transfers responsibility for access and recovery to the wallet owner.

Do not hand a recovery phrase or private key to someone claiming they can speed up a withdrawal. Account support and wallet ownership verification should be handled through the provider’s documented channels.

LocalBitcoins’ marketplace closure changed where customers could trade. For anyone with an old balance, the immediate task is to verify that account’s status and follow the current official withdrawal requirements.
