South Africa supplied 89.1% of Zambia's imports from the SADC-exclusive group in May 2026, according to the Zambia Statistics Agency.
The SADC-exclusive grouping accounted for 31.6% of Zambia's total import bill that month. The figures describe merchandise trade, not bank-transfer volumes or personal remittances.
They nevertheless illustrate the importance of the two countries' trade relationship. Zambian suppliers, families and businesses may need to receive payments from accounts held in South Africa.
Sending money directly into a Zambian bank account involves more than entering a name and amount. You need verified beneficiary details, the correct international bank identifier, an accurate payment reason and a clear understanding of the fees.
This is the bank-account guide. For mobile money and cash pickup, read How to Send Money from South Africa to Zambia.
What bank details do you need to send money to Zambia?
Standard Bank's international-payments guidance says outward transfers require the beneficiary's name, physical address, account number or applicable account identifier, bank SWIFT code and payment purpose.
The information should come directly from the Zambian recipient's bank. Do not rely on an example account number or a general online SWIFT directory.
| Detail | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Beneficiary name | Full legal account holder name exactly as held by the bank |
| Receiving bank | Official name of the Zambian institution and any required branch details |
| Bank account number | The recipient's current account identifier |
| SWIFT/BIC | Correct international identifier for that specific Zambian bank |
| Beneficiary address | Physical residential or business address, as required |
| Currency | Which settlement currencies the receiving account can accept |
| Payment purpose | Correct balance-of-payments reason and documents if requested |
| Reference | Invoice number or a description the receiving bank can reconcile |
Ask whether the payment needs an intermediary-bank instruction. Some foreign-currency accounts use specific correspondent arrangements.
Does Zambia use IBAN?
SWIFT publishes the registered national IBAN formats. Zambia is not listed as a country with its own registered national IBAN format.
Do not construct a Zambian IBAN to satisfy an international-payment form.
Instead, use the actual account number and SWIFT/BIC or other routing information provided by the beneficiary bank.
Some South African banks use generic wording such as “account number or IBAN” because the same form handles multiple countries. The Zambian receiving bank's instructions determine what to enter.
Which Zambian banks can receive international transfers?
Zambian banks publish their own instructions for incoming international payments. Account eligibility and available settlement currencies differ by institution.
For example, Standard Chartered Zambia's official help centre lists three requirements when funding its accounts from another bank internationally: account number, account name and SWIFT code.
It identifies its bank's SWIFT/BIC as SCBLZMLX. That code applies to Standard Chartered Bank Zambia. It is not a universal Zambia SWIFT code.
Standard Chartered Zambia also describes its SWIFT transfer facilities, including foreign-currency receipts routed through its nostro-account arrangements.
Other banks may have different codes, correspondent institutions, branch information and crediting rules.
Ask the actual account holder to obtain current inward-payment instructions from their bank before the sender makes a payment.
For the country's regional banking infrastructure, see Zambia Cross-Border Payments.
How to send money from South Africa to a Zambia bank account: six steps
Start by confirming that the sending bank or authorised payment provider can reach the beneficiary's actual Zambian bank account.
How to send money from South Africa to a Zambia bank account
Confirm bank support, verify recipient details and SWIFT code, prepare documents, compare the rate and fees, submit funds and trace the credit.
Confirm that your bank supports a Zambia account deposit
Choose an authorised South African bank or payment provider with an international bank-transfer option. Check that it can send to the particular Zambian receiving bank, for the intended transaction and currency.
Obtain and verify the beneficiary's full banking details
Ask for the recipient's legal name, account number, Zambian bank name, physical address, the bank's current SWIFT/BIC and any required correspondent or branch details. Verify the instructions with the receiving institution.
Prepare the payment purpose and supporting documents
Provide the genuine balance-of-payments reason and complete required identity or source-of-funds checks. Prepare an invoice, contract or other documents where relevant.
Review currency conversion, fees and charge allocation
Enter the ZAR amount and check the settlement currency, actual exchange rate, sending commission, SWIFT charge, possible intermediary and recipient fees, plus any OUR/SHA/BEN option.
Authorise the international payment and retain the reference
Review the beneficiary and payment details in the bank's official channel. Authorise the instruction and keep the receipt, date, currency, amount and payment reference.
Track receipt and request a trace if necessary
Ask the Zambian beneficiary to confirm the credited funds and currency. If delayed or short, contact the originating bank with the reference and request a trace before initiating a duplicate payment.
How to send an international payment with Standard Bank South Africa
Standard Bank provides step-by-step guidance for outward international payments through its app.
The process includes choosing the beneficiary's destination country, payment currency and amount, entering beneficiary details and selecting who pays the receiving-bank fees.
Standard Bank's wider international-payments page also explains how to initiate an outward transfer through internet banking.
This establishes that the bank provides an international-payment facility. It does not guarantee that every Zambia bank account, currency, beneficiary or amount is supported for every sender.
Confirm Zambia as the destination, choose the correct sending currency and review the live quotation before authorising the transfer.
How much does a bank transfer from South Africa to Zambia cost?
There is no single bank-transfer fee applicable to every South Africa-to-Zambia payment.
Standard Bank identifies commission, SWIFT charges and potential beneficiary-bank charges. An intermediary bank may also deduct a fee.
| Charge | Possible impact |
|---|---|
| Sending-bank commission | Cost of initiating the outward transfer |
| SWIFT charge | International payment-messaging fee |
| Exchange-rate spread | Difference between the executable rate and a market reference |
| Correspondent-bank fees | Potential deductions by a bank handling the payment en route |
| Recipient-bank fee | Amount charged by the beneficiary's Zambian bank |
| Account conversion | A separate exchange rate or charge when the receiving bank converts funds |
A low published sending fee does not automatically produce a higher amount in the beneficiary's account.
For example, a hypothetical R5,000 instruction might deliver different ZMW amounts depending on conversion and intermediary deductions. This is not a live quotation.
Ask the sending bank to show the payment currency, exchange rate, total sender charge and any receiving costs it can estimate.
OUR, SHA and BEN: who pays the charges?
International-payment forms commonly use three charge arrangements.
| Charge option | General meaning |
|---|---|
| OUR | The sender agrees to bear the specified payment charges |
| SHA | The sender and recipient pay their respective banks' charges |
| BEN | The recipient bears the bank charges deducted from the payment |
Standard Bank explains these three arrangements, including the possibility that intermediary-bank charges are deducted from the amount sent.
An OUR instruction should not be treated as a guarantee of the exact beneficiary credit unless the banks confirm the result.
When a supplier invoice must be settled in full, ask the originating bank how the fee instruction is handled before paying.
ZAR to ZMW: how does the exchange rate work?
The rand (ZAR) is South Africa's currency. Zambia uses the kwacha (ZMW).
An international bank transfer might be funded in ZAR, settled in an available foreign currency and converted by the sending or receiving institution.
The beneficiary's bank may accept certain foreign currencies directly, especially when the recipient holds a foreign-currency account.
Standard Chartered Zambia's foreign-exchange information describes its currency-transfer and inward-payment services.
The applicable rate depends on who performs the conversion and when the transaction is executed.
Ask whether the recipient will receive ZMW or another currency. Compare the expected credited amount after fees rather than only a quoted currency rate.

South Africa's exchange-control requirements in 2026
The South African Reserve Bank's Exchange Control Circular No. 6/2026 provides for a single discretionary allowance of up to R2 million per calendar year for qualifying adult resident individuals, subject to the applicable conditions.
The allowance is not a universal bank-transfer maximum, a guaranteed account limit or a reason to misstate the payment purpose.
A South African bank may request identification, proof of funds, an invoice or other supporting documents.
Family support, a gift to an individual, payment for services and settlement of imported goods are different payment purposes.
Use the correct balance-of-payments classification and obtain the documents requested for that purpose.
Businesses should ask their bank about applicable documentation and compliance requirements rather than assuming that an individual's allowance governs company payments.
How long does a South Africa-to-Zambia bank transfer take?
Standard Bank says it processes outward international payments within two business days.
That describes its processing period, not a guarantee that the recipient's Zambian account will be credited in two days.
Standard Chartered Zambia says foreign-currency receipts arrive in its nostro account within two working days. The timing of an individual beneficiary's final credit may be different.
Payment cut-off times, intermediary banks, bank holidays, currency conversion and compliance checks can extend the total time.
Ask the sending bank for an expected delivery range. Keep the original confirmation and payment reference.
Why might a bank payment to Zambia be delayed or rejected?
Incorrect beneficiary account number. Verify it using a current bank document or secure banking channel.
Wrong SWIFT code. A Zambian bank's BIC cannot be replaced with the code for another bank.
Beneficiary-name mismatch. The recipient's full legal name should match the account records.
Unsupported settlement currency. Confirm which currencies the destination account can accept.
Incomplete payment reason. Your bank may hold the transfer while it requests documents.
Intermediary-bank review. A payment may be routed through additional institutions that carry out their own checks.
Changed supplier instructions. Fraudsters may substitute account details in emailed invoices.
If an instruction fails, ask the originating bank whether it can be corrected or recalled. Fees may still apply.
What should you do if the money has not arrived?
First confirm that the South African bank actually accepted and processed the transaction.
Check the beneficiary name, account number, SWIFT/BIC, value date, payment currency and transaction reference.
Ask the recipient to contact their bank about an incoming foreign payment.
If the transfer cannot be located, request a formal trace through the originating bank.
Do not send the same amount again merely because the recipient has not yet received an SMS or bank notification.

Sending a supplier payment to a company in Zambia
When paying a Zambian company, request an invoice showing the legal business name, services or goods, bank details and payment reference.
The account holder should match the intended commercial beneficiary.
Confirm any change of banking details through a trusted, previously established contact channel. Do not rely solely on an email claiming that the supplier's account has changed.
Keep purchase orders, contracts, invoices and transfer confirmations where relevant.
International business payments can require more documentation than personal transfers. Confirm the bank's requirements before scheduling a payment.

Bank deposit versus mobile money or cash pickup
A bank-account transfer is appropriate when the intended recipient has a valid Zambian bank account and needs funds credited there.
Mobile-money and cash-collection products serve different needs. They may have different funding requirements, fees, exchange rates and payment limits.
