Chainalysis estimated that Canada’s cryptocurrency economy reached US$247.7 billion between July 2025 and June 2026, an increase of 2.3% year over year. The findings appeared on 14 October 2026. These are estimates of crypto activity, not the value of Canadians’ holdings.

Canada’s Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) reported 25% crypto ownership among Canadian adults in its survey released on 28 July 2026. It surveyed 2,360 adults between December 2025 and January 2026. The measure includes crypto assets and crypto investment funds, not just Bitcoin held in personal wallets.

For a Canadian buyer, the practical question is how to move CAD into Bitcoin without confusing a low advertised fee with a low total cost. This guide explains the available payment routes, account checks and custody decisions. It also shows how a C$1,000 purchase can differ across trading interfaces.

Can you legally buy Bitcoin in Canada?

Yes. Buying or holding Bitcoin is generally permitted in Canada, but crypto trading platforms may be subject to securities laws. The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) maintain an authorised-platform list with company names and regulatory decisions.

Check the platform's legal entity, not only its brand name. For example, the CSA list includes Ndax Canada Inc., Coinbase Canada Inc., Payward Canada Inc. (Kraken), Newton Crypto Ltd. and Shakepay Inc. Availability and restrictions can vary by province, product and customer circumstances.

FINTRAC registration is a separate anti-money-laundering requirement. FINTRAC explicitly says its registration is not a licence or endorsement. Read Finlazo's Canada cryptocurrency regulation guide for the full distinction between regulators.

How to buy Bitcoin in Canada: six practical steps

  1. Check an exchange's Canadian registration

Start with the CSA's official register. Search the legal company name and review the decision attached to it. Do not rely on a sponsored search result or a social media claim that an exchange is "government approved." Next, compare the features you will actually use. These include CAD deposits, the buy order screen, Bitcoin withdrawal support and identity requirements. Finlazo's comparison of crypto exchanges in Canada examines seven options using documented fees and registration references.

  2. Create an account and verify your identity

A regulated platform will usually request personal details and identity verification before allowing normal trading or withdrawals. Prepare a supported government-issued ID and an account you control. Exact verification requirements depend on the company and its compliance checks. Use an original app or website address that you have independently verified. Enable authenticator-based two-factor authentication if the platform offers it. Never share a verification code or recovery phrase with someone claiming to be customer support.

  3. Choose how to deposit Canadian dollars

Interac e-Transfer is a common CAD funding route. Ndax says Interac deposits are free, and Newton says its Interac deposits and withdrawals are free. Your bank can still set transfer limits or delay a payment. Be precise about how an exchange labels the method. Coinbase's Canadian payment table lists Interac e-Transfer for adding CAD and cashing out, not as a direct buy method. Once your CAD arrives, you can use that cash balance to buy a supported asset. Other routes include electronic funds transfer (EFT), cards and bank wires. Card purchases may be convenient, but they can carry different charges or a less favourable quote. Some EFT-funded balances can be used for trading immediately while remaining subject to a withdrawal hold.

  4. Select Bitcoin and review the order type

Search for Bitcoin under the symbol BTC. Check whether you are buying through an instant quote or a spot trading order book. The displayed Bitcoin price, trading fee and amount received should all appear before you confirm. An instant-buy screen may include a spread in the quoted price. A limit order lets you specify a price, but it may not fill. A market order prioritises execution and can cost more in a thin order book.

  5. Compare the final CAD cost before paying

Review the total Canadian dollars you will spend and the BTC you will receive. Also check any deposit fee, currency-conversion charge, trading fee and future withdrawal charge. The cheapest commission is not always the cheapest complete transaction. Avoid comparing one exchange's Bitcoin purchase price with another exchange's sale price. Use the same asset, order size and time window wherever possible. Prices move continuously, so any quote is valid only when displayed.

  6. Decide whether to keep Bitcoin on the exchange

Holding Bitcoin on a custodial platform leaves control of the private keys with the provider or its custody arrangement. A self-custody wallet gives you more direct control, but makes recovery-phrase security your responsibility. Neither approach removes Bitcoin's price risk. If you transfer BTC to your own wallet, verify the network and receiving address first. Consider a small test transfer before sending a substantial amount. Once a valid Bitcoin transaction is confirmed, it generally cannot be reversed through a bank-style chargeback.

How to buy Bitcoin with Interac e-Transfer

The common Interac route is: create a verified exchange account, open its CAD deposit instructions, send an e-Transfer from your own bank account, wait for the cash balance, then place a Bitcoin buy order. Do not send money to payment instructions received privately through messaging apps.

A payment instruction might use an Interac recipient or request flow. Follow only the instructions shown inside the verified platform. A bank's transfer receipt is not proof that Bitcoin has been purchased; check the exchange's actual CAD credit and trade confirmation.

At Ndax, the published schedule says Interac funding costs C$0. At Newton, Interac CAD funding is also listed as free. These deposit fees do not include the trading charge or the cost of later withdrawing BTC.

How much does it cost to buy C$1,000 of Bitcoin?

Two published Canadian fee schedules illustrate how costs differ. Ndax charges 0.20% per trade, while Newton's standard BTC trading charge is 1.00%–1.15%. Both providers show current fees at confirmation.

RoutePublished buy feeFee on a C$1,000 order
Ndax standard spot trade0.20%C$2.00
Newton standard BTC trade1.00%–1.15%C$10.00–C$11.50
Coinbase standard buyOrder-dependent fee and possible spreadCheck the live quote
Shakepay ordinary BTC purchaseSpread-based priceCheck the live quote

These are illustrative trading charges, not guaranteed all-in prices. Different order prices, spreads, promotions and withdrawal costs can reverse the apparent ranking. Ask how much BTC a C$1,000 payment would actually deliver before confirming.

Ndax also lists a C$1.50 Interac cash-out fee and separate fees for external crypto transfers. Newton lists free Interac CAD withdrawals, with separate network or speed-based conditions for BTC. Deposit, buy and exit charges belong in the same comparison.

Can you buy Bitcoin with a debit or credit card?

Some platforms offer eligible card purchases, but support depends on the card, bank and payment processor. Coinbase's Canadian payment-method documentation lists 3D Secure cards as a direct buy option. It lists Interac differently, as CAD funding rather than direct checkout.

A card's speed is useful only if the final price is competitive. Check any provider fee and any additional bank charge. Do not assume that a transaction will be authorised just because a website displays a Visa or Mastercard symbol.

Can you buy Bitcoin with C$10 or C$100?

You do not need to purchase an entire Bitcoin. Most platforms sell fractions of BTC and enforce a minimum trade size. Ndax says minimum trades generally start around C$1–C$5 depending on the asset, but its live order form is the final authority.

Small orders make percentage fees easier to overlook. A 1% fee on C$100 is C$1, before any spread or withdrawal charge. If you intend to move tiny amounts to a self-custody wallet, a flat network fee can become a large share of the purchase.

What the latest 2026 Canadian figures say

The 14 October 2026 Chainalysis study estimated Canada's annual crypto economy at US$247.7 billion, up 2.3% from the preceding year. It also reported that stablecoins accounted for 44% of CAD-denominated crypto order-book volume in June 2026, compared with 30% a year earlier.

Those numbers do not mean 44% of Canadians own stablecoins. They describe exchange order-book activity measured by Chainalysis. This distinction matters when deciding whether a headline describes users, holdings or trading flows.

Canada's official payment research tells a different story. Payments Canada's 6 October 2026 report found that 5% of Canadians had used cryptocurrency for payments in 2025, up from 3% in 2024. Among Canadians aged 18–34, the figure rose from 4% to 10%.

The OSC's July 2026 research measured a broader 25% who owned crypto assets or crypto funds. Payment use, ownership and crypto-economic activity are three different statistics. None should be substituted for another.

Is Bitcoin safer on a registered Canadian exchange?

Registration can bring compliance duties and oversight, but it is not an insurance guarantee. The CSA warns that crypto prices can move sharply and that platforms may restrict trading or withdrawals. An authorisation decision does not mean a regulator endorses Bitcoin as an investment.

The latest FINTRAC 2025–26 annual report recorded 82 revoked money-services business registrations, up from 12 a year earlier. These totals cover money-services businesses broadly, not just crypto exchanges. They show why registration status must be checked rather than treated as permanent.

Use a strong unique password and two-factor authentication. Confirm that the platform supports the withdrawals you expect to make. Do not treat a screenshot of customer balances or reserves as independent evidence of solvency.

Do you pay tax when you buy Bitcoin in Canada?

Merely buying and continuing to hold Bitcoin does not normally create a taxable disposition. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says that you should still keep purchase records, including the CAD cost and fees. Those records help establish your adjusted cost base.

Selling BTC, exchanging it for another cryptocurrency, gifting it or spending it can trigger tax consequences. The CRA distinguishes capital gains from business income depending on the circumstances. Moving BTC between wallets you own generally is not itself a disposal.

Download your trade history while you still have account access. Keep the trade date, BTC quantity, CAD value, fee and transaction reference. Do not rely on a platform remaining available indefinitely.

What to check before your first Bitcoin purchase

Begin with the legal platform's current CSA authorisation and the availability of your preferred CAD funding method. Then inspect the final order price, not only the headline commission. Include the withdrawal route in your decision if you intend to control your own Bitcoin.

Buying Bitcoin is straightforward operationally, but custody, fees and security deserve the same attention as the initial payment.
