PayShap payment sent from a mobile banking app to a crypto platform, showing South African rand being funded for a crypto purchase

According to the South African Reserve Bank's National Payment System Regulatory and Oversight Report 2025–2026, PayShap had processed more than 725 million transactions worth R659 billion since its 2023 launch.

For someone buying crypto with rand, the appeal is straightforward: getting money from your bank account to a crypto platform can be faster than waiting for a standard EFT to clear.

But there is an important distinction. PayShap can process payments in real time between participating institutions. That does not necessarily mean a crypto platform will credit your account at the same moment.

The platform may still need to receive the payment, identify it and add the rand to your available balance. Once the funds are credited, you can use them to buy crypto.

Before You Start, Check How the Platform Accepts PayShap

Do not open your banking app and send money first.

Start inside the crypto platform.

Open the Deposit, Add Funds or Fund Account section and select South African rand. Check the payment methods and instructions available for your account.

The platform may:

  • Specifically offer PayShap as a payment option.
  • Provide bank account details for the deposit.
  • Require a specific payment reference.
  • Provide a ShapID or other payment instructions.

Follow the instructions provided for your account.

Do not assume a platform accepts PayShap simply because your bank supports it.

Step 1: Open Your Crypto Account

Sign in to the platform where you want to buy crypto.

Go to the section used to deposit or add money.

Step 2: Select South African Rand

Choose ZAR as the currency you want to deposit.

The platform should then show the funding methods or payment instructions available to you.

Read them before making the payment.

Step 3: Check the Deposit Details

You may be given:

  • A recipient name.
  • A bank name.
  • A bank account number.
  • A payment reference.
  • A ShapID, where available.

Use the exact details provided by the platform.

The payment reference can be particularly important because the platform may use it to match the deposit to your account.

Note: A ShapID Is Not Always the Same as a Crypto Deposit Reference These two things can serve different purposes. A ShapID is a proxy identifier used to direct a PayShap payment. It can allow a payment to be sent without entering a traditional bank account number. A deposit reference is separate information that may help the crypto platform identify the payment and credit the correct customer account. If the platform gives you a reference, enter it exactly as instructed. Do not assume that using a ShapID removes the need for a payment reference.

Step 4: Open PayShap in Your Banking App

Open your participating bank's mobile or online banking service.

The exact menu and wording can differ between banks.

Look for the option used to make a PayShap payment.

Depending on the payment instructions you received, you may need to enter bank account details or use a ShapID where that option is available.

Step 5: Enter the Amount

Enter the amount of rand you want to deposit.

The PayShap network ceiling is R50,000 per transaction. Your own bank can apply a lower limit.

For example, Standard Bank states that PayShap payments cannot exceed R3,000 per single transaction.

Check the limit available through your bank before sending money.

If the amount you want to deposit exceeds your available limit, check the other funding methods offered by the crypto platform.

Step 6: Enter the Reference Carefully

If the platform provides a payment reference, enter it exactly as instructed.

This is not the place to add your own description of the payment.

An incorrect or missing reference may make it harder for the platform to identify where the money should be credited.

Check it before confirming the payment.

Step 7: Confirm the Payment

Before sending, check:

  • The recipient details.
  • The amount in rand.
  • The payment reference.
  • Any fees shown by your bank.
  • That the details match the instructions from the crypto platform.

Once you are satisfied, confirm the payment.

Note: PayShap Is Fast, but Your Crypto Deposit May Still Take Time PayShap can process the payment in real time. Your crypto platform may still need to receive the payment, identify it and credit your account. The time between those two events can depend on the platform's own deposit process. For example, the platform may need to: - Receive the payment. - Match the payment to your account. - Check the payment reference. - Update your available ZAR balance. If your deposit does not appear immediately, do not automatically send the same payment again. First, check the payment status in your bank account and review the deposit instructions.

Step 8: Wait for the Rand to Appear

Once the platform credits the deposit, the rand should appear in your available balance.

Only then can you use those funds to buy crypto.

If you are waiting longer than expected, check the platform's deposit information and support instructions.

Keep your payment confirmation available in case you need to provide transaction details.

Step 9: Buy Your Crypto

Once the rand is available, choose the crypto asset you want to buy.

Enter the amount you want to spend and review the purchase before confirming it.

Check:

  • The price being quoted.
  • The amount of crypto you will receive.
  • Any trading or conversion fees.
  • Any spread included in the quoted price.

Can You Buy Crypto Directly With PayShap?

That depends on the provider.

PayShap is a payment service. It does not sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT or other crypto assets.

Its role is to move money between participating institutions.

A crypto platform may allow you to use PayShap as part of its funding process. Another platform may use different deposit methods.

Always check the payment options and instructions provided by the platform before sending money.

What Is the PayShap Limit for Funding Crypto?

The PayShap network ceiling is R50,000 per transaction.

However, that does not mean every bank allows customers to send R50,000 through PayShap.

Individual banks can apply lower limits.

For example, Standard Bank says a PayShap payment cannot exceed R3,000 per single transaction.

This matters when funding a crypto purchase.

A R10,000 crypto purchase may fit within the PayShap network ceiling but still exceed the limit available through your particular bank.

Check your bank's PayShap limits before choosing this funding method.

What Happens If Your PayShap Payment Does Not Appear?

Start by checking the payment itself.

Confirm that the transaction was completed successfully in your bank account.

Then compare the details you entered with the deposit instructions from the crypto platform.

Check:

  • The amount sent.
  • The recipient details.
  • The account details or ShapID used.
  • The payment reference.

If the details are correct but the deposit has not been credited, contact the platform through its official support channel.

Keep your payment confirmation and transaction details available.

Do not automatically send the same payment again simply because the deposit has not appeared yet.

How Long Does a PayShap Crypto Deposit Take?

PayShap is designed for real-time payments between participating institutions.

The crypto deposit can still take longer to appear in your account because the platform may need to identify the payment and match it to your customer account.

The timing therefore has two parts:

  1. 1The PayShap payment reaching the receiving institution.
  2. 2The crypto platform processing and crediting the deposit.

A successful payment does not always mean the funds appear instantly in your trading balance.

Is PayShap Better Than EFT for Buying Crypto?

It depends on what the crypto platform supports.

An EFT can be useful for standard deposits where immediate availability is not essential.

PayShap can be useful where the platform accepts the payment route and your bank allows the amount you want to send.

The important thing is to follow the platform's deposit instructions exactly.

Sending a PayShap payment to the wrong account, using the wrong ShapID or leaving out a required reference can make it harder for the platform to identify your deposit.

Before You Send: Five Things to Check

Before confirming a PayShap payment to fund a crypto purchase, check:

  1. 1The platform accepts the payment method. Do not assume PayShap is supported.
  2. 2The recipient details are correct. Use exactly what the platform provides.
  3. 3The ShapID or account details are correct. A ShapID can direct the payment, but it may not replace other instructions.
  4. 4The payment reference is correct. Include it exactly when the platform requires one.
  5. 5The amount is within your bank's limit. The R50,000 PayShap network ceiling may be higher than the limit available through your bank.

The Bottom Line

PayShap can provide a faster way to move rand from your bank account to a crypto platform where the relevant payment route is supported.

The most important part is not simply sending the money quickly.

Follow the deposit instructions exactly.

Check the payment limit available through your bank. Enter the correct recipient details and reference. Then wait for the platform to credit the rand before buying crypto.

Once the funds appear in your available balance, you can complete the purchase.
