DTCC Launches Tokenization Service for US Stocks, ETFs and Treasuries
DTCC launched tokenization of eligible US shares, ETFs and Treasuries, with 20 signed firms. The $114 trillion custody figure is not tokenized volume.

The Depository Trust Company launched a securities tokenization service on 28 October 2026. Eligible firms can now create blockchain-based representations of securities held at DTC.
Twenty participants have signed agreements to use the service. It operates through Canton Network and DTCC's private Besu blockchain.
The launch brings tokenization into production. It does not put all US stocks on a blockchain. DTCC announced the service on Wednesday.
How does the new DTCC service work?
The DTCC Tokenization Service, or DTS, creates digital versions of securities already held at DTC. These tokens represent corresponding ownership and economic rights.
A participating firm can convert an eligible position to token form. It can transfer the token to an approved wallet. It can also convert the position back to a conventional DTC record.
DTCC says the tokenized entitlements retain the rights and protections of traditional securities. This is different from an unbacked token that merely tracks a share price.
The service is intended for approved DTC participants and their clients. Retail investors cannot simply visit DTS and mint tokens.
DTCC tokenization in numbers
| Measure | Reported figure | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service launch | 28 October 2026 | Production availability | DTCC |
| Signed participants | 20 | Agreements to access DTS | DTCC |
| Industry working group | More than 150 firms | Design and testing collaboration | DTCC |
| Integrated blockchains | 2 | Canton and private Besu | DTCC |
| Eligible securities | 34 reported | Limited launch inventory | CoinDesk |
| DTC assets under custody | More than $114 trillion | All DTC custody assets | DTCC |
| DTCC securities processing in 2025 | $4.7 quadrillion | Group-wide annual transaction value | DTCC |
The $114 trillion figure is not the value already tokenized. It describes DTC's entire custody operation.
Likewise, $4.7 quadrillion represents transactions processed across DTCC subsidiaries. Neither measure is tokenization revenue or actual DTS transfer volume.
DTCC did not publish a verified amount of securities tokenized at launch.
What assets can be tokenized?
The initial program focuses on a limited group of highly liquid securities.
| Asset class | Eligible scope | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| US equities | Select Russell 1000 shares | Not every publicly listed share |
| Exchange-traded funds | Select major-index ETFs | Not all ETFs |
| US government debt | Select Treasury bills, notes and bonds | Not the entire Treasury market |
DTCC's official service materials describe the eligible asset categories. CoinDesk reported 34 securities in the launch inventory.
An earlier planning document listed fewer assets. This is why the launch date matters. A reported list of eligible securities does not prove active trading in every instrument.
Which financial firms signed up?
The list includes J.P. Morgan, Bank of America, Citi, Barclays and BNP Paribas. Morgan Stanley, UBS, Fidelity Investments and State Street also signed agreements.
Other firms include Apex Clearing, Alpaca, Citadel Securities, Clear Street and DriveWealth.
DTCC published the 20-participant list. Signing an agreement does not prove that every firm has processed tokenized trades.
The wider working group included more than 150 companies. Working-group membership is not the same as becoming a production participant.
Which blockchain networks are supported?
At launch, DTS was integrated with Canton Network and a private Besu network operated by DTCC.
| Network | October 2026 status |
|---|---|
| Canton Network | Integrated |
| DTCC private Besu | Integrated |
| Additional networks | Planned for 2027 |
DTCC describes the service as interoperable. But the announcement does not grant all public blockchains access.
The company expects additional networks in 2027. These additions remain plans, not completed integrations.
Can tokenized securities move 24 hours a day?
Already-tokenized positions can move between registered wallets around the clock. Converting conventional positions into tokens follows a narrower schedule.
CryptoSlate reported that conversion orders run from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time on business days.
That difference is important. A bank planning weekend token transfers may need to prepare token inventory during weekday conversion hours.
A token transfer also does not automatically settle the cash leg of a securities purchase. Payment arrangements and regulatory controls still apply.
Why is the October launch significant?
DTCC previously completed real production transactions using tokenized DTC assets on 15 July 2026. Participants tested security conversions, Treasury transactions and collateral use cases.
DTCC reported those July transactions as preparation for the October launch.
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| December 2025 | SEC staff issued a limited no-action letter |
| May 2026 | DTCC set out its production timetable |
| 15 July 2026 | Live tokenized transactions completed |
| 28 October 2026 | Service launched |
| 2027 | Additional networks planned |
The October milestone turns earlier tests into an ongoing service for eligible institutions.
It remains a controlled rollout. DTCC has not released comprehensive usage figures.
Did the SEC approve tokenized shares?
SEC staff issued a no-action letter in December 2025 for a defined DTC program.
A no-action letter states that staff would not recommend enforcement action under specified circumstances. It is not a blanket approval of every tokenized security.
DTCC operates under conditions in the letter. Existing investor protections and securities-market rules still matter.
The underlying assets remain within DTC's custody framework. Tokenization changes how eligible entitlements can move.
Is $30 trillion already tokenized?
No. Some headlines have cited approximately $30 trillion in market value for assets within the potential eligible universe. That is not an issued-token balance.
The actual value converted into DTS tokens was not disclosed in the launch release. The broader $114 trillion DTC custody total is also not a tokenized amount.
This distinction prevents a misleading conclusion. A large pool of eligible assets is not proof of large adoption.
What does this mean for investors and crypto users?
Tokenized securities could make institutional collateral easier to move. That may help financial firms manage liquidity between approved counterparties.
But a faster blockchain transfer does not establish cheaper brokerage trading. It also does not mean stocks can now be freely bought by anyone using a crypto wallet.
Custody and settlement rules remain important. Finlazo's guide to verifying crypto exchange reserves explains why asset custody and platform claims need careful review.

What happens next?
The most useful future disclosures are actual tokenized balances and completed transaction volumes. They would show adoption beyond access agreements.
DTCC also plans to add networks in 2027. It will need to maintain controls as the service expands.
Reporting cutoff: 30 October 2026. Primary figures come from DTCC. The 34-security launch count and conversion hours are attributed to contemporary reporting.
