Egypt had 56.4 million citizens with active financial accounts by the end of June 2026, equal to 79% of the country's 71.4 million citizens aged 15 and above, according to the Central Bank of Egypt. Those active accounts include bank accounts, postal accounts, mobile wallets and prepaid cards.

For South African senders, the regulatory framework also changed on 8 April 2026.

SARB Exchange Control Circular No. 6/2026 increased the Single Discretionary Allowance from R1 million to R2 million per calendar year for South African resident natural persons aged 18 years and older.

The South African Revenue Service says qualifying resident individuals can transfer up to R2 million offshore per calendar year without requiring a Tax Compliance Status PIN for an Approved International Transfer. The separate Foreign Investment Allowance remains R10 million per year and requires the applicable Tax Compliance Status process.

For the recipient in Egypt, the bank-account route is usually built around the correct IBAN.

The Central Bank of Egypt says every Egyptian IBAN has a fixed length of 29 characters.

That number should be checked before the transfer is funded.

Can You Send Money From South Africa to an Egyptian Bank Account?

Yes.

The exact route depends on the provider you use.

A bank may process the payment as an international bank transfer.

A specialist remittance provider may instead use its own local payout network to deposit the funds into an Egyptian bank account.

The recipient's bank must be supported by the provider.

Do not assume that selecting "bank account" means every Egyptian bank is automatically available. ### Provider Options: Mama Money, WorldRemit and MoneyGram

Mama Money confirmed on 30 July 2026 that its Egypt corridor still supports direct transfers to major Egyptian bank accounts.

The company said the corridor had expanded to give recipients additional ways to receive money, while bank-account delivery remained available. Check the live transfer flow for the exact bank and payout options before paying.

WorldRemit accepts transfers from South Africa and lists Egypt among its destination markets.

WorldRemit's Egypt page says bank transfer is one of the available receiving methods and that transfers can be sent to select Egyptian-pound bank accounts. The exact bank-account availability should still be checked in the live South Africa-to-Egypt transaction flow. (WorldRemit)

MoneyGram says its South African service can send money directly to bank accounts at more than 400 banks globally.

MoneyGram's Egypt service lists bank account as an available receiving method alongside cash pickup and mobile wallet. That does not by itself confirm that every Egyptian bank or every South Africa-originated transaction is eligible, so confirm the exact bank in the live payout flow. (MoneyGram Egypt)

These providers should be compared using the same rand amount.

Then compare the transfer fee, exchange rate, final Egyptian-pound payout and delivery estimate.

Check the exact destination bank before paying.

Egypt's banking market is large and includes major institutions such as the National Bank of Egypt, Banque Misr, CIB and other CBE-regulated banks.

The recipient should provide the account details required for an incoming international or provider-routed payment.

What Details Do You Need to Send Money to an Egyptian Bank Account?

The most important requirement is usually the recipient's IBAN.

The Central Bank of Egypt says the Egyptian IBAN consists of 29 characters.

It includes the country code, check digits, bank code, branch code and the customer's basic bank account number.

The recipient's bank may also require other information depending on the sending method.

You may be asked for:

  • Recipient's full legal name
  • Recipient's Egyptian IBAN
  • Name of the recipient bank
  • SWIFT or BIC information where required
  • Recipient's address where required
  • Purpose of the transfer
  • Other information requested for compliance

Do not treat an IBAN and a SWIFT code as the same thing.

CIB Egypt explains that the IBAN identifies the individual account, while the SWIFT code identifies the bank for interbank transfers.

If the provider requests both, enter both.

How to Send Money From South Africa to an Egyptian Bank Account

1. Get the recipient's IBAN

Ask the recipient to provide the IBAN for the exact account that should receive the money.

Egyptian IBANs have a fixed length of 29 characters, according to the Central Bank of Egypt.

Do not manually reconstruct the IBAN from an account number unless the recipient's bank provides an official method.

The recipient should copy it directly from their bank statement, banking app or another official bank channel.

2. Confirm the recipient's bank

Ask for the bank's full name.

This helps you verify that the bank selected in the provider's payout flow matches the recipient's actual bank.

The National Bank of Egypt, for example, reported 688 branches, domestic financial units and representative offices as of 30 June 2025.

That figure demonstrates the scale of one of Egypt's largest banking institutions.

It does not mean every South African transfer provider offers a direct payout relationship with every NBE account.

Provider availability must still be checked.

3. Choose a provider that accepts South African senders

Select South Africa as the sending market.

Select Egypt as the destination.

Then select bank account if that payout option is available.

Some providers support bank deposits.

Others may offer cash pickup or mobile wallets instead.

MoneyGram Egypt lists bank account as one of its receiving methods in Egypt alongside other options.

Standard Bank's South Africa MoneyGram information says South African customers can use its MoneyGram service subject to the applicable requirements.

Availability and pricing should still be checked for the exact transaction.

4. Enter the recipient's details exactly

Enter the recipient's name exactly as required.

Then enter the IBAN carefully.

A single incorrect character can cause rejection or delay.

CIB Egypt says IBAN use for domestic and international transfers helps reduce errors and delays.

If the provider requests a SWIFT or BIC code, obtain it from the recipient's bank or an official bank source.

Do not guess.

5. Enter the amount in rand

Enter the amount you want to send in South African rand.

The provider should disclose the transfer fee and exchange rate before you confirm.

Compare the final Egyptian-pound amount expected to reach the recipient.

The World Bank's remittance methodology treats the total cost of a remittance as including both the transfer fee and the exchange-rate margin.

A low visible fee can therefore be offset by a weaker exchange rate.

The final payout is the more useful number for comparison.

6. State the real purpose of the transfer

South Africa's cross-border reporting system requires accurate purpose reporting.

The SARB's exchange-control framework requires Authorised Dealers to report the purpose of transactions through the appropriate balance-of-payments reporting category.

Give your bank or regulated provider the real reason for the payment when requested.

The provider or Authorised Dealer handles the regulatory reporting process.

Do not choose a false purpose simply because you believe it will make the transfer easier.

7. Complete the payment and compliance checks

Your bank or transfer provider may ask for identification.

It may also ask for the purpose of the payment, source-of-funds information or other supporting documents.

The current R2 million Single Discretionary Allowance is an exchange-control threshold for qualifying South African resident natural persons aged 18 years and older, effective under SARB Exchange Control Circular No. 6/2026 from 8 April 2026.

It is not a blanket exemption from all anti-money-laundering or compliance checks.

Do You Need an IBAN to Receive Money in an Egyptian Bank Account?

For a normal international bank transfer, you should expect to need the recipient's IBAN.

The Central Bank of Egypt says all Egyptian IBANs have 29 characters.

The format begins with Egypt's EG country code and includes check digits, bank and branch information and the account component.

CIB Egypt says customers need an IBAN for domestic and international transfers to and from other banks.

Banque Misr likewise says IBANs are used for receiving transfers from bank accounts inside or outside Egypt.

The recipient should provide the IBAN for the specific account they want to receive the money.

A customer with multiple accounts may have a different IBAN for each account.

Bank-Specific Information for Major Egyptian Banks

National Bank of Egypt

The National Bank of Egypt is one of the country's largest banks.

Its financial statements for the period ended 30 June 2025 reported 688 branches, domestic financial units and representative offices. (National Bank of Egypt)

The bank also listed a representative office in Johannesburg in those financial statements. (National Bank of Egypt)

For an incoming payment, however, the recipient should still provide the exact NBE IBAN for the receiving account.

Do not use the existence of an NBE representative office in Johannesburg as evidence that every South African customer can make a direct retail transfer through that office.

Banque Misr

Banque Misr's IBAN guidance says Egyptian IBANs contain 29 digits and are used to receive transfers from accounts inside or outside Egypt.

The bank says customers can obtain their IBAN through channels including branches, its website, statements, IVR and WhatsApp service.

For a South Africa-to-Egypt transfer, use the exact IBAN supplied by the recipient.

CIB Egypt

CIB Egypt says its customers require an IBAN to send or receive domestic and international transfers to and from other banks.

The bank also makes an important distinction between the IBAN and SWIFT code.

The IBAN identifies the customer's account.

The SWIFT code identifies the bank in interbank transfers.

Check which information your sending provider requires.

Other Egyptian Banks

The same core rule applies across Egyptian banks.

Use the recipient's official 29-character IBAN, as defined by the Central Bank of Egypt.

Do not assume an account number alone is sufficient for an international transfer.

How Much Does It Cost to Send Money to an Egyptian Bank Account?

There is no single fixed South Africa-to-Egypt price.

The cost depends on the provider, amount, payment method and exchange rate.

The World Bank's Remittance Prices Worldwide report reported that the global average cost of sending remittances was 6.3% in the third quarter of 2025.

Digital remittances averaged 4.59%, while non-digital services averaged 7.30% during the same period. (World Bank)

Those are global averages.

They are not a quoted price for sending money from South Africa to an Egyptian bank account.

Compare providers using the same rand amount.

Then compare the final Egyptian-pound payout.

How Long Does a Bank Transfer to Egypt Take?

Delivery time depends on the sending provider and payment route.

A bank-to-bank international payment can involve intermediary institutions.

A specialist remittance provider may use a different local payout structure.

Compliance checks can also affect timing.

Do not assume that a bank-account transfer is instant.

Check the delivery estimate shown for your exact transaction before paying.

Important Regulations From South Africa

Single Discretionary Allowance

The regulatory timeline changed on 8 April 2026.

On that date, SARB Exchange Control Circular No. 6/2026 increased the Single Discretionary Allowance from R1 million to R2 million per calendar year.

The allowance is available to resident natural persons aged 18 years and older, according to the circular.

SARS says qualifying resident individuals can transfer up to R2 million offshore per calendar year without requiring a Tax Compliance Status PIN for an Approved International Transfer.

The exact transaction can still be subject to ordinary compliance requirements.

Balance-of-Payments Purpose Reporting

The statement that cross-border transfers require purpose reporting is broadly correct.

The customer may be asked to state the reason for the transfer.

The regulated bank or Authorised Dealer then handles the applicable balance-of-payments reporting.

Use the real purpose of the funds.

Do not treat a purpose category as a formality.

Incorrect information can create compliance problems and delay the payment.

Larger Offshore Transfers

SARS says the Foreign Investment Allowance remains R10 million per calendar year and requires the applicable Tax Compliance Status process.

The R10 million allowance is separate from the R2 million Single Discretionary Allowance. (SARS)

Do not combine the two limits when calculating your position.

Why Bank-Account Transfers Matter in Egypt

Bank accounts remain central to Egypt's financial infrastructure.

The Central Bank of Egypt reported 56.4 million citizens with active financial accounts by the end of June 2026, equal to 79% of the country's 71.4 million citizens aged 15 and above.

The CBE definition includes bank accounts alongside postal accounts, mobile wallets and prepaid cards.

That scale gives senders multiple possible payout routes.

For some recipients, a direct bank-account deposit is more useful than cash collection.

For others, a mobile-wallet payout may be preferable.

Compare the route with the recipient's actual needs.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using an account number instead of the required IBAN

Egyptian IBANs have 29 characters, according to the Central Bank of Egypt.

Get the official IBAN from the recipient.

Confusing the IBAN with the SWIFT code

CIB Egypt says the IBAN identifies the account, while the SWIFT code identifies the bank.

Check whether your provider requires one or both.

Selecting the wrong recipient bank

Verify the bank name before funding the transfer.

Comparing fees without comparing the exchange rate

The fee is only part of the total cost.

Compare the final Egyptian-pound payout.

Giving an inaccurate transfer purpose

Provide the true reason for the transfer when your bank or provider requests it.

The regulated institution is responsible for applicable balance-of-payments reporting.

Assuming the R2 million allowance removes all checks

The R2 million Single Discretionary Allowance applies under the revised framework introduced on 8 April 2026 through SARB Exchange Control Circular No. 6/2026.

Compliance checks can still apply.

The Bottom Line

Sending money from South Africa to an Egyptian bank account is mainly an exercise in getting the destination details right.

Egypt had 56.4 million citizens with active financial accounts by the end of June 2026, representing 79% of the country's 71.4 million citizens aged 15 and above, according to the Central Bank of Egypt.

For the bank-account route, the recipient's Egyptian IBAN has a fixed length of 29 characters, according to the Central Bank of Egypt.

For South African senders, the Single Discretionary Allowance is R2 million per calendar year for resident natural persons aged 18 years and older following SARB Exchange Control Circular No. 6/2026, effective 8 April 2026.

SARS says qualifying resident individuals can transfer up to R2 million offshore per calendar year without requiring a Tax Compliance Status PIN for an Approved International Transfer.

Before sending, confirm the recipient's bank.

Confirm the exact IBAN.
