Chainalysis estimated US$8.34 billion in South African domestic business-like cryptocurrency transfers during July 2025–June 2026. Chainalysis published the finding on 29 October 2026.

This is not US$8.34 billion in retail sales. Chainalysis identified wallet transfers whose recipients had activity resembling service providers. Its category includes P2P traders, merchants and other vendors. The report does not establish the portion spent in shops.

The findings suggest growing use of crypto for commercial activity. They do not measure card-payment displacement or the number of merchants that actually received crypto.

How much crypto did South African businesses receive?

Chainalysis capped individual transfers at US$50,000 to limit large outliers. Its figures are estimates of measured blockchain activity, not audited national turnover.

The categories are not interchangeable. The wider crypto economy includes investments, trading and transfers.

Where are everyday crypto payments appearing?

Chainalysis described a partnership between Scan to Pay and MoneyBadger for Bitcoin payments at participating QR-enabled checkouts. Its reported nearly 700,000-location footprint reflects payment-network reach, not proof of transactions at every location.

For MoneyBadger's own Q2 2026 payment sample, Chainalysis reported half of payments were below US$13. It also reported 87% were below US$60.

These overlapping thresholds must not be added together. They show that many transactions were small.

MoneyBadger also reported that ecommerce represented 48% of its payment value. This reflects one provider's analysed activity, not national ecommerce spending or the share of merchants accepting Bitcoin.

In its August 2026 report, MoneyBadger said payments on its network grew 95% in the first half of 2026 compared with the first half of 2025. Rand-denominated value spent grew 176%. MoneyBadger also reported 2,927 active merchant locations in August 2026, up from 57 in August 2025. This is distinct from its nearly 700,000-location potential acceptance footprint. Start with a verified business provider. Check supported wallets, coins, networks and the legal entity offering settlement.

What about regulation and refunds?

A shop accepting crypto for its own goods is not automatically the same as a crypto intermediary serving third parties. The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) requires crypto asset service providers to be licensed. Check whether the provider's exact activity requires authorization. Verify the provider, contractual terms and settlement arrangements.

Crypto transfers can be irreversible. Merchants need clear refund procedures, customer identification where applicable and auditable records.

The South African Reserve Bank and National Treasury published a draft cross-border Crypto Assets Manual on 3 August 2026. The manual and related capital-flow regulations were proposals subject to consultation, not final rules in that notice. Cross-border transfers may face different requirements from domestic checkout.

For broader legal context, read South Africa's crypto regulation guide or the Africa crypto regulation directory. Confirm the current FSCA authorization register before choosing a provider.

What does the data mean for South African merchants?

The findings support carefully testing crypto checkout. They do not show that every South African store should adopt Bitcoin or that the reported transfers are sales.

Measure real checkout completion, fees and rand settlement. Compare crypto with card and bank payment performance.

Bottom line

Chainalysis estimated US$8.34 billion in domestic business-like crypto transfers. That is not equivalent to retail crypto sales.

For merchants, the operational test is simpler: customers must be able to pay, orders must reconcile, refunds must work, and settlement amounts must be clear.
